    Default hey folks, newbee question.

hi guys, searched all over the place and i can't seem to find anything to answer my question, i'm hopping someone in this community can help. i found this forum while reading up on the "KMAC" method of the 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 reversion.

ok, the situation: i have 1.0.2 on my phone currently [never upgraded to 1.1.1], unlocked, with a bunch of great apps. i am an at&t user so i never unlocked the sim. yesterday i wanted a fresh start on my phone so i did a restore of 1.0.2, hit up ibrickr & installer and everything else followed. now i noticed that even after the restore a lot of the app settings were still on the phone when i reinstalled them which lead me to believe the restore process doesn't clean slate the phone.

the $1,000k question: if i was to perform a restore of 1.0.2, then try to apply the 1.1.1 patch, will the patching process sniff out that at one time my phone was unlocked to apps and brick itself, or will it patch without incident?

thanks much for any info guys!

I don't know -I'm pretty happy with the state of my iPhone at this time-, but I'm sure you'll find the answer in the sticky threads. Good luck!

    thanks for the reply duck9000!

i'm guessing that was a gentle nudge to the "Don't Update To 1.1.1 If You Have Sw Unlocked Phone!" thread . i read that one and apologies for not really having a full grasp on the lingo. i confess that i'm a bonafide laymen when it comes to the nitty gritty of the guts [both software and hardware] of my iphone.

closest thing i could find to the information i am looking for was:

If you do a full revirginizing - reflashed your baseband to stock condition first, THEN restored to 1.0.2, you might have better luck. But I'd say this is probably not a good idea to try, there is no guarantee that something else hasn't been affected that could still result in a semi-bricking.

Let's just wait for somebody to pull apart this update and figure out what magic dookies Jobs has dropped into the toilet for us.
i was unsure if that was relevant to where i am at right now. i've seen the term "unlocked" [suggesting two different types of being "unlocked"] used for both allowing 3rd party apps and for opening up sim cards for carriers outside at&t. are sim and app mods treated equally and "unlocked" basically translate to "absolutely anything beyond stock"? ie: your iphone is liable to brick [either temporarily or permanently] whether you have a new carrier sim or a nintendo emulator installed, no difference?

on a side note; i'm definitely with you though, 1.0.2 is rockin it, and i don't foresee any upgrading any time soon. more then anything i'm just trying to figure out what my options are in the case of an "oh shit" situation given the recent apple vs modder war that seems to have begun. do i have an out if the shit hits the fan, or is my iphone a time bomb counting down?

again, i apologies for being a total greenhorn, and thank you for the info!

Since you've unlocked your phone and have installed apps, upgrading to 1.1.1 under any circumstances right now will brick your phone.

The bricking comes from a process not from installing your apps, but from unlocking the phone itself. Restoring 1.0.2 does not 'reset' your phone to a state that will accept 1.1.1 without bricking it. Has something to do with flashing a chip somewheres in the phone. Searching on the board here will explain it better.

i'm definitely going to take your word for it and stay away from any patches at the moment, but, your post does conflict with this one found in the thread duck9000 linked [unless i'm misunderstanding what's going on here]:

If you have unlocked your phone to work on any GSM provider, then you'd better be careful. I'd say look for anybody with a unlocked phone which survived the 1.1.1 update and ask them what they did. I wouldn't even suggest using a relock method to do the 1.1.1 update.
please correct me if i'm wrong, but, i'd fall under the "safe" category since all i've done is install UI customization, games & other trivial apps, yes? i haven't unlocked my phone away from at&t, just added in a few new bells and whistles. is the potential impending doom hachu talking about referring to something further down the line and not what we are dealing with today?

good read btw duck, thank you for the link.

FW update 1.1.1 will remove all your apps and put your phone back in "jail", no question. Whether or not you can re-install these apps after the update, I'm uncertain. I don't think so.
