Help with new to me Unlocked iPhone 2G
Hi: Looking for some advice/guidance. I just bought an unlocked 2G iPhone from the original owner. Its got a bunch of apps loaded on it that I want to keep [the original owner said he's ok with that]. I want to synch the iPhone to my iTunes library. And to do that I assume that iTunes will erase the iPhone.
- Am I right in assuming the apps will be wiped off too? If yes, is there anything I can do to backup & reload the apps? Note that Cydia is on the menu so its installed.
- MORE IMPORTANT: Will iTunes do anything to the "unlocked" state of the iPhone? ie will my iPhone still be unlocked & jailbroken?
Also, down the road I will have to replace the cracked glass screen on the iPhone. When I boot it up for the first time after taking it apart & replacing the glass, will I have to restore the iPhone or will it be OK? i.e. again am I at risk re:unlocked status.
thanks!

Apps installed via Cydia wont/cant be affected from itunes,so u re good to go.Apps installed with itunes of your seller will be wiped out.
Itunes will do"something"to the unlocked state of the iphone(aka lock it)when u update its firmware and only then.Till then u re once again, good to go.Even if u update it,dev team is working for you and unlocks/has unlocked every single firmware there is till this day.
About its cracked screen,no u wont have to restore it,but thats not the difficult part
Also dont worry about your iphone been locked forever from a firmware update.Since its a 2g,there re always be an unlock as long as dev team deals with it.

Spoke too soon - I've got another problem now. Now when I click a non "core-app", like Google Earth or Flashlight, the title screen opens for a few seconds and then I'm back to the desktop. I've tried reinstalling a few apps through iTumes but that doesn't make a difference. To top it all off, I can't find the Safari icon anywhere! Any suggestions?
thanks

Just my 2 cent to that: If I buy an iPhone 2G from someone, first thing I do is a DFU restore of the iPhone. This way you get rid of all legacy stuff that may lead to problems you are experiencing now. The iPhone 2G is easy to unlock.
Here's what I'd do then: DFU restore to firmware 2.2.1. Then use one of the tutorials to unlock it:
for Windows
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)
for Mac OS X
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone (Mac) [Updated 2.2.1]
Connect to iTunes then and choose "setup as a new iPhone" NOT "restore data from a backup". Next thing is to download the apps from the app store you want to have (you need an account there).
If you want Cydia apps, start Cydia on the iPhone and install them.
This will lead to a working iPhone and will only take 1-2 hours to get it done ;-)

when I did "restore" in iTunes, after it ran it it said my sim wasn't supported. Then went I ran qwkpwn it hung on the "wait while your iPhone is prepared for jailbreaking ..." screen; it was stuck while it was "loading exploit Bootloader" for an hour. Now I can't restore in iTunes, and qwkpwn just hangs up at the same point. I've tried this numerous times today. That thud is the sound of iPhone going in the garbage can.
Great.

Great.
Shut down the iPhone by holding home and Start/Sleep until screen goes black while connected to your PC/Mac. iTunes shut down. Get the iPhone into DFU mode, iTunes will start up, restore to Apple stock 2.2.1 and start from scratch.
No need for the garbage can, just do it.

I told you to put the iPhone into DFU mode. iTunes will then restore it to firmware 2.2.1 without the message!

This is because you did not install the .Net framework on your PC. get it at Microsoft, it's free.
