Unhappy Help with iphone and a WPA network

    Dear all,

Firstly, please excuse me if this has been aswered in another tread. I have used the search tool but I have found no aswer to this question.

I have a home wireless, WPA/WPA2 configured network through an Apple Airport express. The key is 13 digits and contains both numerical and alphabetic characters.

My iphone gets to connect to the network with full range. I type the correct password. But it gets a fake IP adress 169.x.x.x kind. Internet does not work on the iphone. I cannot surf nor check my email. Safari always displays the "cannot connect to the server" message.

If I chage the Network security settings to WEP, with 13 digits password as well, my iphone gets to connect with a real IP (10.0.1.4). Internet works properly then.

I have tried to change the DHCP internet setting on my airport to get a different IP address format but the iphone always gets those fake IPs.

Consequently I need WEP settings for my iphone to work but I would like to have a WPA network .

Anyone knows what can I do to solve this problem. Suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Did you try connect any other device to this network??? what ip address did it get?

I don't have apple airport so I do not know this device but if it works like router normaly you should get a ip from private range 192.x.x.x

Anyway try to put all setings manualy like ip, network mask, router, dns in your iphone wifi setings and we will see what happend

hello everybody and thank you for your comments.

I have to say that I am sure that I type the correct key.
secondly, other devices are connected (namely 2 laptops and one xbox360) which get proper IP adresses of the 10.0.1.x type and work oK.

When I input manually the IP, DNS, IProuter and again IProuter, just nothing happens and the iPhone cannot access any wep page (safari loads forever). After a while, the configuration changes automatically to fake IP again.

I will try to set a shorter key and will report. Thanks again guys. In the meantime further suggestions are very wellcome.

I know your Problem well, but i know it from my unsecured WLAN; if i set my Router to WPA2, it works well, if i set it on unencrypted, i get a fake ip and internet doesnt work. Very sadfull.

Yes, indeed when using WEP security it just works fine. In my case, it is ONLY in WPA that the iphone is not able to get a valid IP adress.

Airport lets you set it up as WPA/WPA2 (together) or WPA2 and not just WPA, could it be the problem? I tried with WPA2 but Iphone still gets fake IP.

Anbody else with an Airport wireless router and WPA network having/not having issues?

    Thanks
