Use a clock with seconds and make sure you do exactly what it says.
Turn on your phone, showing the rectangle or the cable+itunes icon. Press the home and the sleep button at the same time. After exact 10 seconds, let go the sleep button, while holding the home button 15 seconds longer. When that 15 seconds are over, keep holding it while you start itunes up. When a popup comes up saying your phone is in restore mode, let go of the home button.
Or just use independence to go in DFU mode and restore

Hi Schalkse, thanks.
I still cannot restore to 1.0.2 with the yellow triangle screen. I tried entering DFU in iNdependence and holding and releasing the buttons.
Everytime i finish restore i get this error msg saying "the iphone xxx could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)". And i get the screen with sync cable and itunes icon, which means it's still 1.1.1.
Can anyone suggest a hint how this might be solved? Thank you so much.

So, if i understand correctly, you unlocked your phone and then upgraded?

Yeah that's what I did.
First I activated/jailbroke it with iNdependence. Used it for a while.
Then I tried to install apptapp but selected the wrong version of firmware. So the installation failed and I got a yellow triangle screen. I didn't know how to fix it. So I chose to upgrade first and downgrade.
However I hasn't been able to downgrade since that.
I really hope it hasn't become totally useless.

Mmm, that is indeed a mess
so, you are in 1.1.1. The problem is that you need to get out of the restore mode. Apptap can not be installed on 1.1.1. And there is a way to get out of that restore cycle.
There are several methods, the point is that an attempt to jailbreaking the phone must be made in order to kick it out of restore mode. Search for this on the forum of try other jailbreaking apps mac, as wel as pc.
There is even a website that does the job i think.
