"O2 refused to confirm that it has won the right to sell Apple's music-oriented handset exclusively in the UK, despite evidence appearing in source code on Carphone Warehouse's website," Fildes reports. "Peter Erskine, chief executive of O2, said: 'We're excited about this product and we certainly hope to be marketing it later in the year when it launches.'"

i spoke to a friend who works fairly senior at TMO and they told me it's looking likely they will get the iphone!

Be interesting to see if a UK release *does* happen this side of Christmas. x

Rumour has it that the iPhone will be officially available in France, Germany and the UK between Sept. and Nov. this year.
The german iPhone carrier is rumoured to be T-Mobile because they also have the best EDGE coverage in Germany. Don't know about other countries but I suppose that Apple NEEDS Edge for data communication, so the carriers with the best EDGE coverage in France and the UK should get the first deal offers from Apple. Just a wild guess of course but it would make sense.

vodafone has a pretty good edge in germany, as well.
i guess is all about the money...

Vodafone just started with EDGE in Germany, only a few larger cities are covered, EDGE is mainly a substitute for UMTS/HSDPA in regions outside the cities where UMTS/HSDPA isn't available. T-Mobile has a wide EDGE coverage already in Germany. I doubt that Vodafone would start to offer EDGE everywhere in Germany, so they can just make the deal with Apple.
