The consensus is that it's safe with some isolated instances for failure. If you've jailbreaked the phone you'll probably need to restore back to v1.0 before the upgrade. If you've just done a activation hack, it should upgrade fine.

What about going forward... how likely is it that an unlock solution would work for 1.0 but not 1.0.1 ?

(I'm thinking of the Sony PSP firmware updates.)

Admittedly, Apple hasn't (yet) entered into an arms race, where each iteration breaks previous firmware hacks, though they may have moved a few things around in preparation.

By the way just to let you know - I have an iPhone in the UK activated and I have not had this "send to .Mac gallery" button appear on my phone. I have done the the update.

I remember someone asking if this was build into the update and time activated or done through AT&T.

I am guessing AT&T are sending something over the network to update it - is this possible?

They wont enter that arms race.
Simply because once the iPhone hits certain countries in Europe, Apple wont be able to win that race. The iPhone in some countries in Europa has to be unlocked from the factory! Or it wont be legal to sell it.
It would be a large market (combined) to say no to if Apple decided not to sell in any European country where locked phones are illegal.

So basically, once those factory unlocked phones hit the market, you should be able to just take their FW and upload it to an american phone. That is, if the hardware is the same.. Problem here is there are only a very limited number of European countries that use EDGE. Most use 3G or at least GPRS..

Time will tell. Once the iPhones hit the UK, Germany and France.. Time will tell in regards to the hardware. Then it will only be a couple of months till the phone hit other european countries and it will have to be unlocked from factory.

by the way, i did do the update on both itunes and the iphone and the one thing it did do was wipe out my network configuration. it's easy to reset but it was a surprise. i assume no one else had that issue.

also, i hope that's true about the unlocked european phones. anything that helps us (the codes from those phones) t-mobile people in the US and all the others with various sims get this unlock faster...that's a good thing!

Hi long time reader, first time poster!!!

I'm in the uk and performed the update on my phone last night (the phone was bought off ebay and already came activated but I dont know by which method) everything is still working great (thank god!!) and I do have the new web gallery button. I think you need to have a .mac account and iLife 08 on your mac set up for web galleries to get this button on your iphone.
