Well, I decided to go for the TurboSIM version. Unfortunetaly these are officially sold out and the price on ebay was rather high. To be honest I wish I'd be capable of doing the hardware hack, but I'm too scared that I mess up. And rather than having NO phone at all afterwards...

I would have to say Turbo SIM, especially If you're lucky (or rich) enough to get one. I think it is unlikely Apple will address Turbo SIM "issue" in any of its future Firmware updates, but it is allmost certain they will change modem firmware. When they change the firmware you're basically left with two (maybe three) options:

1: Update Firmware -> open phone & re-do HW unlock
    2. Keep old Firmware (I don't think this is an option since there are some nice features coming - hopefully)
    3. Update firmware & redo "SW" unlock (Install small reed switch when doing first HW unlock)

But on the other hand there is also an element of "geekability" and ofcourse feeling of pride when you do something new, unthinkable & courageous...

If you can find (and afford) one, go TurboSim. Much easier to do and much less chance of owning a shiny new iBrick.

The hardware unlock is much less expensive (providing you don't brick it) but requires a degree of technosavy that very few people have. I also suspect you will have to redo it every time Steviepoo mucks with the firmware... and as long as He is mucking, it would not take much for Him to make the technique useless. Firmware updates to the phone could also make the TurboSim useless (i.e. by doing a random number of SIM inquiries), but would probably be easier to work around.

Turbo SIM is the way to go...

You have to get lucky and order some from bladdox.com. I ordered 4, sold 3 of them for a little bit more than I paid and it worked out that I got my Turbo SIM for free!

The big risk is if a software unlock comes out after you have ordered the Turbo SIMs and before you have sold the extras.

Depending on how daring you are, you could order more Turbo SIMs and turn a profit. I figured that 7 Turbo SIMS would have gotten me my iPhone for free.

Obviously it's best to deal with local people only because there's always a risk with paypal, etc.

Just remember that gouging isn't cool. Anybody who sells a Turbo SIM for more than double what they paid is doing the community a disservice.

Turbo sim is not the way to go. Its cumbersome and highly expensive. The hardware unlock is the only way to go. Hardware unlock is the real deal. Turbosim is expensive and a workaround at best.

The HW-unlocking has to be re-done indeed if the firmware changes, as the existence of the patch is needed for another SIM-card than the AT&T one to be accepted by the phone.

On the other hand the only change He has to do in the firmware is to add a periodical check for the correct IMSI of the SIM-card, and the TurboSIM is also rendered useless.
