Hardware unlock ... Step 1 failed, please assist!
Hi,
I have a problem with my iPhone, I can not seem to open the black cover, I have tried two methods, placing a plastic knife [quite a strong one] into the back and moving it from one point to the other. I want to do the hardware unlock!
And the other method from ifixit [or pda parts]. To insert metal spudger [I used a thin knife] and lift up to points. Then insert the spudger around the chrome encasing and the black cover to the metal case, I can't get further than the round corner!
Please help, now I have just put it all back together, and one thing, the tip of the knife used on top of the dock connector actually broke and is still in my iPhone! But the iPhone is still working.
Meh, I don't know what to do :-
wait for a software unlock which is always being delayed.
wait for turbosims [ I have ordered them and they have arrived at my home, but I am on holiday now and I have a couple of days, I wanted to try the hardware unlock, as one user pointed out on this forum ''it is better to tell your friends that you hardware unlocked the phone yourself''.]
Thanks,
tem07.
Tools: Plastic knife, some other plastic tools, metal knife, aluminium wires, polystyrene.

Return yours to apple, and buy a hardware unlocked one.... like mine, for 650us

Try starting from just above the dock connector. Slide a guitar pick under there and work from both sides. A metal knife will wreck your iphone for sure.
You can order the opening tool and spudger from ifixit. suggest wait for them to deliver before going any further. But if you are having problems so early on maybe it is best to wait for a sw unlock.

For one thing DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE until you get the tip of that spudger out. Make sure your phone is off. Put it on a shelf and order some proper iPod tools. Wait for them to arrive and try again.
I also stopped at this point and decided not to go further. This is a difficult step, and no one has really explained it effectively yet.

Mhhmm... True, I just ordered an iPod opening tool to get the tip out of that thing.

Buy multiple THIN guitar picks and start from the tiny gap in between the top of the dock connecter and the antenna cover. Try to wedge two in there to create the required gap and try to get a pick under a gap created under the speaker holes. Go around the side of the cover (difficult). Once you see a gap between the black cover and the aluminum panel, push down and slide out the cover to loosen further (use force). Getting the cover off fully should be trivial at this point.
Of course, use the above at your own risk. It worked for me without breaking anything, but no guarantees.
