    Default Hacking wi-fi hot spots....

Now with the excelent capabilities of the iphone as a web browsing device... is very interesting to have wifi always available....

anyway, here in my country about 40 % of hot spots arent protected... i think of the protected ones... around 90 % are using very weak encription methods like wep....

is there any recomendations for tools to easyly hack wi-fi hot spots? it does not matter if they are windows or linux only....

althoug a native iphone wi-fi hacking app will be AWESOME!

    pd:

this is a device designed specially for hacking this stuff... but at 3600 $ a piece... is a little bit *expensive!*

This really would be an awesome app: being able to crack weakly encrypted wireless networks on the move. Very slick.

On the mac, the app KisMAC is supposedly able to crack wireless networks using WEP pretty quickly (althought I've never had any success with it). It does it by putting the airport card in the mac into a special mode where it passively watches data packets floating past it (even if the packets weren't intended for that computer). Once its got enought of these, it can tell what the password might be.

Therefore, I would guess that you would have to be able to put the iPhone wireless card in to a passive mode too. The ability to do this is quite hardware specific, I think. Only certain recent macs can do it.

I'm guessing the iPhone wifi hardware might not support this.

Would be awesome if it did though ;-)

    Great idea.

imposible i dont think that anyone can put the wireless card of the iphone in monitor mode.

this means to re-patch the firmware again, and upload drivers to put the card in that mode...

Anyone who has their network wide open deserves to have freeloaders using it. Hint to them: get a fking clue.

Anyone who is using WEP and thinks its going to keep out more than just the casual surfers looking for a quick free ride: you need to get a friking clue too.

There are a few tools out there but one of the best (though fairly new) is Aircrack- NG.

It's a windows client mainly (though also available for linux) but it can crack both WEP and WPA-PSK.

Now to see THAT ported to the iPhone/iTouch would be amazing.

You can see more on Aircrack - NG here.

Interesting. Hugerbots, did you unlock your phone or install 3rd party software on it? If so, aren't your statements a bit hypocritical? Re: Mac addresses. Ever hear of anything called LAAs? They're configurable on the iPhone.

what I would like is an application like hitchhicker for windows mobile.

It connects to all the open access points and it tries to ping google. If it is not redirected to a login page it vibrates and rings to notify you that it found a free hotspot! I used to walk with my mobile in my pocket and usually within 5-10 min I could check my emails!

    Cool

Repost old chap. I've already asked this, and looked into it...

    Kismet on iPhone

Unfortunately you need to be able to put the wireless driver into promiscuous mode (or monitor mode, depending on what you call it). The old drivers for old cards like the Prism2 allowed this, but modern drivers for chipsets like the Atheros don't have this enabled.

Whether the Wifi chip in the iPhone has a promisc mode available in the standard driver is unlikely. As to anyone cooking up their own kext to allow this to happen.... I think the people with kext dev skills for the iPhone have much bigger issues to solve before messing about with this

It's worth pursuing, as I had great luck years ago with a Zaurus SL-5000D and a compact-flash Prism2 card, but modern integrated Wifi / BT / whatever chipsets are a different kettle of catfish....

I have the Viha driver on my TiBook with 1st gen Airport which worked well, but the next revision of Airport (extreme) was Atheros with the various issues (the Linux guys were very angry about the card since there were no specs, and some random corporate bullshit about the card being so flexible that unsigned code running on it would effectively turn it into a software radio, violating FCC rules in the USA, etc....)
