here is a howto on hacking WEP and even wpa2/psk with a PC. just need to wait for the packets. it took less than 1 second to crack once i got the packets!

OK then does anyone know the exact wireless chipset in the iPhone, and I'll have a look about to see if there's support for the driver for promiscuous mode.

Nothing is going to work without putting the wifi card into promisc mode, otherwise the user-code won't be shown any of anyone else's packets.

FWIW I think running something like a promisc wifi capture client plus wireshark/ethereal on an iPhone will be too much for the CPU and storage speed to handle IMO. On a busy network, there'll be too much traffic and your storage log will get too big. Would be fun though

Question is how do you figure out the chipset on you computer in the first place? I got both a dell laptop and a macbook where would i go to check the chipset for the wireless card, both are built-in so i have no idea

Not at all. This whole debate is planted firmly in the moral grey area of whether its stealing to hop onto someone's open (or kinda open) wireless network.

I don't think many people would consider the act of stealing from someone's purse a moral grey area.

I really have to restrain myself to say something I'll regret later on but only this:

If someone leaves the house door unlocked, this gives you the right to break in and use his house and/or steal something?

If someone leaves his car door open, this gives you the right to steal/vandalize it?

If a pretty girl doesn't wear long trousers and a long shirt, does this mean you can rape her if she wears a super short skirt and a short shirt you can see her nipples in?

If you fall asleep in the train, does this mean that everybody has the right to steal your stuff?

C'mon guys, a little morale wouldn't hurt (ask your parents about it).

I have a friend who cracks WEP for fun or even connects to unprotected WiFi spots to leave a "message" for the owner to activate WPA or WPA2 to protect the network. This guy has been caught recently by a german computer crime unit who was "accidentally" at the scene for breakfast. This friend was stupid enough to sit in a cafe while doing his stuff. In Germany, breaking in in WiFi hotspots which are protected or unprotected is a crime, same applies to many other countries, some of you may not know.

I know that I may get some laughs telling you this over here on an iPhone "hacking" forum but to ME personally, it makes a huge difference if I do something for ME, helping ME to improvei the experience of a product I BOUGHT with MY money and WITHOUT DAMAGING anyone else or if I steal or damage a third party which may even get in serious trouble (there is the case of a german Internet User who suddenly had a police anti child porn unit in his house with a warrant because his neighbor used his WiFi to surf the net.

"Hackers" and people who think that they're IT pros have a certain codex of honour, even if it may not mean anything to YOU. Creating damage and stealing from people is certainly NOT part of the "game", like it or not.

Just think about this: how do you feel if somebody steals your precious iPhone? Would this be OK to you, just because you didn't pay attention for a second (trust me, professional thieves can steal everything from you, no matter how good you pay attention or how many locks you have on your door)?

Think about it, even if you don't like what I'm saying.

+1 Totally agree with you man... Hacking your phone that you bought with free apps is one thing, stealing someone else's internet is a whole other thing... Some morals and ethics guys come on..

    Wow...real "hackers"... :p

An experienced and halfway intelligent "hacker" can trick your wireless basestation into revealing the initial handshake between your basestation and wireless clients. Then he runs a brute-force dictionary attack on the handshake to recover the PSK. The attack can also be done offline at a high rate of speed, which would be much worse.

To prevent this, the goal with a WPA/WPA2 protection is to use a sufficient "strong" password for WPA/WPA2 to keep a "hacker" occupied for a couple of years, using the currently available computing power technology available to "normal" people. Of course some IT pros working for specialized companies and/or government agencies may have more sophisticated equipment at their hand, incl. more computing power. I highly doubt however that these two categories would "hack" into your or mine WPA/WPA2 WiFi network, unless we have vital information which is worth trying and trying and trying.

Bottom line is: it IS possible to "hack" into a WPA/WPA2 protected WiFi network but only if it has been poorly configured.

Btw: another friend of mine is running a WiFi "honey pot" with REAL (but filtered) internet access. He lives in a large city and at least once a month, sometimes even once or two times a week, somebody uses the "apparently" unprotected WiFi to surf the web and usually these guys leave a bunch of passwords and user ids for websites, even homebanking because they think they're so clever. My friend usually makes fun of these guys by messing up with their accounts to teach them a lesson but nothing really bad.

Like somebody told me once: if you think you're clever, never forget that there will be somebody who is more clever than you. Better stay out of trouble.
