I don't think Gmail supports push just yet...although I might be wrong.

    You can set up fetch.

Go to Settings > Fetch > Advanced > Gmail > Fetch < Advanced < Fetch < Select every x minutes.

Push mail on yahoo is almost unusable...

Best thing I ever done was open an exchange account (free) with mail2web.com and copy-forward mail from my gmail to mail2web...

Works awesome, each mail is pushed to the phone in about 3 seconds... :hack:

I think nuevasync will soon be supporting push gmail through imap, along with their support for gmail contacts and calendar.

sophos9, thanks for the idea! Going to try that! Let me get this straight though - since it's pushed, it should be pushed without the iphone checking mail every x min, right? In my understanding of push, you can have Fetch OFF and Push ON and you'll get your email pushed to your iphone when it arrives, without the phone constantly fetching and wasting battery life. Is that correct?

    Exactly that...

    An example is as such:

With fetch set at 15 minutes, your phone will check your mailbox 96 times a day regardless of if there is any mail

With push, in the same period, if you had no mail you phone would not do anything

The mail2web solution works perfect for me, its all exchange based and push works on the nail every time (unlike yahoo where I could never get a consistent service)

Thanks for the answer, sophos9! Ok, I set up a free account (LIVE), got into my inbox, and have couple of noob questions, so please bear with me

    1. How do I enable push from the mailbox itself? There seems to be no setting except for ActiveSync for Win Mobile devices. So do you use mobile.exchange.mail2web.com as the incoming server name in your iphone mail configuration?
    2. It says "you cannot check your email through POP3 or send email through SMTP... These features are only supported in the paid plans" -- what do you use to check your mail then? IMAP? And if yours if free as well, I guess all your outgoing emails go thru your regular gmail account, is that right? That's way better for me btw

    Thanks!!
