Default Girlfriend dropped her legit ATT unmodified phone. Now texting doesn't work..options?

    Hello,

my girlfriend dropped her legit ATT unmodified phone on the cement when grabbing a child from running in the street. After hitting the cement, the phone appears to have the silver casing near the left inferior border slightly protruding (just enough so when you run your finger along the side, you feel a slight protrusion). You can sorta push the protrusion back towards its virginal position but it bounces back.

Everything on the phone works except texting!!

the entire touch screen works, except when trying to open the keyboard once you open the sms message. initially, she was able to get the keyboard open, could type, but the space bar would not work.

I find this interesting because all of the icons at the bottom of the screen work, just the texting app is messed up.

I just found another thing. When she is trying to type in her email password, she cannot get to the number button (the button to be able to enter in numbers). The spacebar also does not work when this keyboard is open.

    What are her options?

What will they say if she goes in to the apple store and says, this doesn't work?

    Repair options?

Anyone have any experience with this?

She isn't very tech savy, so I think busting off the cover will not be an option and I don't want to void her waranty and get in trouble if I attempt it.

Overall, while I'm glad it wasn't my JB UL 1.1 phone that hit the cement, I'm also glad that child is still alive and didn't get creamed by the cars in traffic. A life saved is better than a broken iphone...

PS. I also tried updating her phone to 1.1.3 because I wondered if it was a software problem, since all areas of the touch screen seemed to be working... I can't figure out when some buttons work while other buttons(like space bar or switch to numbers) do not when they are in the same locations as the 4 icons at the bottom of the screen which work. However, updating to 1.1.3 did nothing.

I thank you so much for your help and I'll win major brownie points with her for finding the best solution. Thanks again.

Try restoring, or take it into an Apple store. I assume it's no longer under warranty?

It sure is! As for the iPhone, I think taking it back to an Apple store for replacement would be the best option.

    iPhone (OTB 1.1.1 / Currently 3.1)
    Unlock, activation, jailbreak: PwnageTool 3.1

How long does the warranty last for? What voids the warranty? Does dropping it void the warranty?

I bought her the Iphone (and one for myself) about October, 2007.

It was before 1.1.2 came out and just about the time when when 1.1.1 was being jailbroken.

I remember waiting to buy both her and my phone until it was possible to have 1.1.1 JB and UL - I didn't want to own a 1.0.2 JB and UL when I would be missing out on the 1.1.1 features. (and I figured I had to buy her one if I got one - plus I was on the shit list at that time - so 3 birds with one stone).

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

Does "replacement" mean, buy another full price?

If there is any physical damage that bothers her, try the Apple store.

If not, give a restore a try first. I cannot see why other functions would work and not text messaging. It's hard to belive that the SMS functionality only can be compromised with a shock.

If after the restore attempt it still does not work, go to Apple!

althought not very honest try and make it look like it wasnt dropped if possible and maybe they will swap it over for u without thinking about it.

Of course you could just say she saved a child and the phone fell and they may out of the goodness of their hearts change it for you!

I would attempt a restore as that may fix any issues and as long as it is backed up you won't lose anything!

I restored it, she restored it.

No luck. Will try the apple store.
