I am new to the community and have to say i can understand the problem with all these questions. I knew nothing about the iPhone before coming here but i read posts and guides and worked it out for myself. Yes i have hacked phones before but if you are prepared to give it time you can understand without having to ask stupid questions.

I bought my iPhone on saturday and successfully jailbroke and unlocked it teh same evening.
I had waded through hundreds, possibly thousands of posts over the previous couple of weeks to try and understand what was involved.
How many people actually do read ?
I suspect not many read or search which is why the threads are such a mess.

The problem is that it's relatively difficult to find information on a forum. There should be some kind of a community wiki that isn't dev related so we could organize the info better.

completly agree, the fun has gone out of it. I sold my iPhone as i was beginning to realize that no matter what we do apple will always get the upper hand. i pop onto the sites now and then to see whats going on and to help out if i can. Yes it was new and fun but once you get past the shiny exterior you are confronted with the posability of constant upgrades/waiting for new unlocks to be made. Look at the last couple months with the 1.1.2 situation. Made me realize that we can try and realistically we will never win. And to be fair if it was not for geohot we will still not have a unlock.
This being said it was fun playing the cat and mouse game with apple, and i am sure i will buy another iphone when the situation improves lol
But its been a blast and ill always help anyone out cos i know how frustrating it can be. Just a lot of messing around to get that wow factor

I believe the best way would be to build a section with tutorials for any problem or issue that has been solved. As iclarified has done on his website.

I'm realistic... I'm still on 1.1.1 and loving it. There isn't any NOT fun experience that I am having. If you get hung up on having to chase the "new" (exactly what Apple wants you to do) then you will loose your mind if you don't have the stomach for it.
Personally I suggest you find your happy place, sit back and watch all the craziness happen around you.
Do I NEED to upgrade to 1.1.2... nope, Do I NEED to upgrade to 1.1.3 not really. I am waiting for 1.1.4 which I think will pose a significant amount of a benefit.
Regarding the hostility and "use the search" and OMG my phone is broke... that has been happening since day one. We all need to admit that there is a lot that needs to be learnt when attempting to play with these phone. Even if you know what to do at one point unless you stay current your doomed.
For every 5 people that use the search there are 10 that don't. I admit the search engine here SUCKS! It needs a Google search function that will accept shorter strings and get better results.
Look at all the freakin STICKY's everywhere... that is because in general people are loosing their minds and are not learning and reading and are sweating cause they want their phone to work.
I don't try and learn anything here, it's way too much helter skelter now. I suggest as above that people should find a site and author that you trust and let them do the hard work and use their tutorials when posted. Donate to your favorite guy.
It's a phone... everyone uses one pretty much. The problem with that is, that there are some people here that shouldn't be here. They should be buying a phone that is "fixed" using it and living happily ever after.
And above all, STOP f-in with your phones if you don't know what your doing. Have the guts to say that this is out of my league. If your gonna do it anyway then STOP and think when you start to sweat... are getting angry and panicked that it's broke and seek (search) (learn) for a solution.
It's doesn't have to be so hard. Enjoy it, it's a great phone.

what you say about staying current is soo true
im still on 102 and its been so long since ddoing it all back then and all the stories of troubles and the like put me off
ie
now i have a working phone with everything
then
i could risk a few upgrades and get a bit better phone
or
i could end with a brick and headache!

Correct!
If you really need to upgrade your phone every time it's possible, it should be because you LIKE it!
Because it's not necessary!, even on 1.0.2 you have a great phone, much better than any other phone.
