Everything in the unlock process went smoothly. Got PN = 0 which means its unlocked. Can activate with vodafone or tesco sims, but neither will connect to the network properly.

Vodafone UK SIM:
Insert SIM
Activate using iAsign
Wait 3 minutes
Activation failed, could not contact network
Wait 3 more minutes
Activation succeeded
Vodafone UK appears in top bar with full signal
2 seconds later goes back to No Service
A bit later you see no signal bars

Tesco SIM:
Insert SIM Activate using iAsign
Wait 3 minutes
O2 UK appears in title bar with full signal
Tried to make a call, call fails
Tried incomming call, fails
After a few mins goes back to No Service

I'm a bit stumped now even tried a restore to 1.0.2 to no avail. I read a guy in Germany has the same problem so I'm contacting him.

Any ideas? Anyone else in the UK got it to work and with which network?

Mine in italy work ok with TIM and VODAFONE tested,
follow procedure after some hours
if anyone interested in ROME I can do it in 1-2 hours

You need the certificates to use your sim...
We used an apple ffor that to generate the right certificates ;-)

Let me get this right: you have FULLY RECOVERED your modded iPhone to FW 1.0.2 and then activated it only (NO other mods!!!) and it still doesn't work? Did I understand you right?

first I tried straight after unlocking it didnt work. Then I read someoine else had done a restore with 1.0.2 and it worked so I tried that.

basically I have restored to 1.0.2, my PN is still unlocked, I can activate with a non at&t sim (originally impossible) yet my own sim cant join the network. Thats the problem.

ok so I have a friend who has a brand new dutch 3G vodafone sim card and it worked perfectly. Joined vodafone UK immediatley after IAsign and can make calls perfect.

So my understanding is you need to have a new 3G sim for the iphone to work.

I will phone vodafone and ask for a new sim (mine is from 1996 I believe) and hopefully I'll be in business!!!

(bad news for people who use tesco mobile though, the tesco sim I tried was brand new also and didn't work)

Hmmm, sounds strange, I have tried SuperSIM and TurboSIM hacks in the UK and both worked perfectly. It took me ages to find a V1 SIM to work in the UK and as you can appreciate, a V1 SIM is pretty old!
The reason it was so difficult to get SuperSIM working is because operators like Tesco and Tmobile only use V2 or V3 sims because of their age in the UK.
However once we get onto TurboSIM, everything seems to work, the only SIM I haven't tried is the THREE Network.

Im my experience, most UK networks are operating newer style SIM and they all have the gemplus stamp on them.

hey you need to undersand the operators cannot control what sims are used. v1 v2 v3 are used on their network. if they shut of any of them there would be a huge uproar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
