Geohots way is impressive, although pretty "useless" if you like to use newer firmwares (which you will, since there are bugs to kill and features to implement).

Simply because of the fact, that you have to repeat ALL the steps after every firmware update. Apple will "close" the hole by changing some parts in the baseband firmware in no time, simply because of the fact, that AT&T begins to get mad about Apple (first TurboSim, and now a generic hardware unlock).

So, if you plan on using this fine method, keep the wires in place. Solder AND glue them (using epoxy) to keep them in place. Use VERY thin wires and scott tape to attach them on the backside.

The switch is only needed, to trick the baseband by feeding 1.8 V to it. A simpler way is just by shortcutting the wires and then releasing them again.

The soldering is not that hard to to (if you soldered some time before), please do NOT start soldering on your precious iPhone for the start. You'll destroy it in no time.

The software part is alot more tricky ('specially if you not experienced in that SSH & minicom stuff).

    ... my 2 cents

I'll try to use two pins or needles connected with a wire. That should do since you only need to do the connection for a short time.

I can confirm that Mr. Hotz's method works perfect. The hardest thing was definately getting the back covers off without damaging/scratching, so i gave that up and got some scratches instead. Soldering would probably be harder, but i didn't solder, which made it REALLY easy. Here is what i did instead: http://iphone.unlock.no/needles2.jpg

PS: Those are not just regular needles - they are "flexible", so that it's easier to hold stable. If you have equipment for unlocking Siemens, you probably have a similar cable.

I have another idea: are there any unused pins on the docking connector? So we could connect our two wires to these pins and keep the iPhone closed for the coming updates

Great workaround for those of us with the right equipment and very steady hands. That's me out on both counts :-(

What if I used this method to unlock, and then restore it through iTunes?

If there is no baseband update included in the restore it should be no problem at all. But - as dragon-tmd stated above - Apple will probably include such an update in one of the coming versions.
Here you can find a way for blocking the automatic updates: http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/ind...Update_Service - don't know what happens then ...

Afaik, while doing a full restore, the baseband firmware is also flashed ....
