If you rely on jailbreak or unlock. DO NOT UPGRADE.

No existing tools can jailbreak thus version yet and the new baseband closes the exploit used by blacksn0w for unlock.

There is no ETA on updated tools. 3.1.3 is a minor upgrade and extreme caution should be taken in upgrading to this version if you ever want to jailbreak or unlock.

Also 3GS and 3g ipox touch owners should have already backed up their OS 3.1.2 ECID SHSH if not rush to back this up. You do not need to jailbreak to obtain a backed up SHSH for 3.1.2 and Apple will stop signing 3.1.2 very soon if they have not already.

I see that cydia has backed up the SHSH for me (Cydia reports that I have them on file for 3.1.2) Do I have to do anything else?

how do I retrieve them when I need them?

You tell your computer to talk to Cydia instead of talking to apple during a restore in iTunes.

Not a bad idea to grab a copy of the shsh and store it safe locally also. You can do this with the firmware umbrella.
