Let's see if I got this.

If you updated to 2.2.1, you can revert to an older firmwawre, but not an older baseband. You'll be able to jailbreak the phone, but you can't unlock it, yeah? That means that those of us who were using the phone as a phone have to wait for yellowsn0w to work with the new baseband, right?

    Yes you're right

Things will go two ways we will see a pwnagetool/quickpwn release that allows you to update to 2.2.1 without the baseband being updated or The Dev Team will make yellowsn0w that works with 02.30.03 BB.

Personally I think the first thing we'll see is pwnagetool/quickpwn with a neutered BB update then yellowsn0w will follow later.

    But I'm only guessing

Thanks for clarifying. Until then, I'll have to to use my old Razr V3x... *sigh*

What you need is the latest quickpwn version and firmware 2.2.
2.2 is being used for the jailbreak and yes i know use this at your own risk, but currently a lot of our Dutch users (on a dutch forum) used this trick and it worked.

You need to unpack quickpwn.exe with winzip or winrar.
After that you will see a folder structure like
    \quickpwn22\data\PwnmetheusBundles

In this PwnmetheusBundles folder you will see all the different firmwarebundles from either the 2g or the 3g model.

What you need is a folder called iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle
So what you can do is copy the 2.2 folder to iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle for the 2g model.

Just be sure that you have the folder iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle with something in it. (can be the same as the 2.2 version)

Restore your 2g to 2.2.1 and run the quickpwn version in your unpacked folder. And do the normal procedure with quickpwn. Quickpwn will say it needs the 2.2.1 firmware but instead you can select the 2.2 version. After that it's doing the normal jailbreaking stuff and voila. You are jailbroken and activated.

If you do not exactly know what i am telling in this manual, then please wait for the dev-team release.

I am a big fan of the dev-team, but just tried this temporary solution and it works fine.
thanks - but that won't fix the upgraded baseband problem will it?
I now have 02.30.03 after itunes restored it and upgraded it after a crash - I didn't select it and had no idea it was upgrading the baseband....

Quickpwn will not fix upgraded baseband on 3G phones. Currently, you cannot update right from iTunes, otherwise your phone will get back locked as if there were no Yellowsn0w.

That is why dev people always says to wait before update and to use Pwnage instead: to remove the baseband update which locks again your phone.

you should have unchecked the iTunes preference box that says Check for Updates Automatically.

you should only update Firmware holding the Option Key on a Mac, so you can CHOOSE which Firmware you are updating to.

Lettin iTunes automatically update will leave you with Baseband 2.30, as you have discovered.

Apple loves people who check the box to Check for Updates Automatically, especially when they say YES to go ahead with the Update.. BAD idea

    moral
    DONT UPDATE automatically

shame, seems you cant believe anything they write on them forums, best just to wait until release and see what they add. if they ever decide to add the things a phone should of already had like working bt and the rest of it...

this is my 3rds Update ive done instead of restore i notice that when using ssh that everytime ive done update there is double and tripple of folders everything applications ringtones that cant be good if you keep doing it and add a million extra folders all the same why do apple make the update do that so you have to sit there deleting folders in ssh
