Future Iphone Firmware Updates - What will apple do?
Has any1 ever thought that apple anticipated the hacking and the unlocking and therefore withheld certain viable software features? Closing holes and fixing exploits requires lots of testing and creative thinking, and who better to do the hard yards then an eager hacking community. Maybe, Apple is holding back on a few semi-vital updates, like MMS, Flash, Java, Video recording, over the air calendar syncing, authentic third party apps etc, so they can use initial updates to expose weaknesses in the firmware, patch them and finally come up with a solid, "unpenetrable" firmware that includes these features. How else would apple entice users to upgrade to a firmware that is truly locked?
This theory seems buried by the prospect of unlocked phones in France, but maybe the 250,000 people that already use an unlocked phone may suffer from this sort of action.

Wouldn't we just try and embed 1.1.1 safari in 1.1.x and go from there?

Yes, I personally think this way, too.
Apple is releasing core functionality over a timeframe to get the hype on. This is an excellent marketing approach, but I don't think iPhone hackers are part of the equation.
Of course that, for Apple to get multi-millionaire contracts with wireless phone companies, it's necessary to send signals against unlocking. That's what they need to do.
Apple is managed by seriously qualified people and they know that 15% of iPhones being unlocked is part of the gain (because these iPhones probably wouldn't have been sold otherwise).
What is coming up:
- More functionality in a new update (which will also prepare the iPhone OS for OFFICIAL 3rd party apps through iTunes)
- Relock of unlocked ones
- Lost of unofficial 3rd party apps
- A renewed challenge for the hacking community (although french iPhone is gonna change the way we understand the device).
Cheer up!

they can't do that much... unless they remove DFU mode (which they probably won't)
as long as we're able to downgrade, i think it's likly that we can do anything
