    Default French connection, question

    Has anyone (non-national or resident) walked into a French store and purchased an official unlocked iPhone?

    What did they ask you?

    Thanks

    Oh, and I have searched this and many other forums for a clear definative answer.

    Apparently not searched too well. There is no answer on these forums. There are too many exact threads asking the same exact question with no definitive answer on these forums.

    Two threads, same question as yours, no answer:

    * http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/show...t=17745&page=7

    One thread here (http://discussions.apple.com/message...011645#6011645) where someone did buy a French phone who is Belgian, however they cannot unlock it via iTunes since the credit card tied to their iTunes account is not tied to a French address. That same scenario is covered on this forum (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18092)

    And lastly, read the last posts on this thread (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/show...=16875&page=28) on how there's no way in hell they won't sell one based on nationality (evidenced above in the Apple forums), however as noted in that same Apple discussion, iTunes may prevent you from doing the actual unlock.

    Thus to answer your question to the best of probability using the info from all the threads above and from Apple's support website, you will be able to buy an unlocked phone from a French retailer. If you use a credit card you will need to provide verification of your identity (this is obvious, though of course it doesn't need to be French). However when you take it home it's possible (though not completely established at this point) that iTunes may not unlock the phone since your account is not registered to a French address. I suggest reading all those forums and maybe ringing Apple or Orange if you have further questions.

    Well, someone, a Belgian, at another forum (intermactivity.be) bought one, got home, couldn't do anything, had to go back to France to get a prepaid card and got stuck because he needed a French address. Now they've agreed to send the codes (why?? why the codes???) to the store where he bought his phone. So now all he can do is wait.
    It might take up to a week, I'm curious as well as to wether he'll be able to activate with a non-French account..

    Has anyone actually activated an officially unlocked French iPhone without a French iTunes account? Using a UK, US or Swiss iTunes registered account for example... all threads don't give a solid answer.

    I think that it is important to know for all of us, non-French residents, wanting to take advantage of the French unlock law.
