    Default The FrankenPhone

Okay, okay, sorry for the title, but I just had to say it at least once. ;P

Anyway, I don't think that the 1.1.1 jailbreak is going to be as much of a success as the previous jailbreak. I could go down the list about why, but suffice to say that it severely inhibits one's use of the iPhone, and it would take apple all of 30 seconds to patch up the one critical hole that is needed for the jailbreak to work.

I think that as much as the community wants to move forward, we need to do what's practical, not what seems to be better if you kinda look at the future the right way. Thus, I think that us non-developer power users finally have a purpose in this community, to attempt to port as much of the improvements of 1.1.1 to 1.0.2.

I am already deep into the process. Basically, I took MobileMusicPlayer.app from the 1.1.1 decrypted dmg and placed it onto my 1.0.2 phone (which has ssh installed and running properly). As expected, the app doesn't launch properly, but if you launch it from the ssh command line, you can see what errors are occurring. The app is referencing many of the frameworks that were updated. Slowly, I added each one, one by one, until I finally realized that the whole frameworks folder was going to be replaced. So I did it, and rebooted. As expected, the phone did not boot, instead giving me the swirling spiral on the apple logo screen, but, amazingly, ssh was up and running. So I replaced SpringBoard.app, again getting the swirling apple logo screen, and ssh still up. That's where i'm at right at this current second, i'll probably update soon.

Okay, in the process of scp'ing the components of the System folder, I copied the lockdown folder. This puts the iphone in restore mode (no ssh, *facepalm*), so, yeah, don't do that, okay?

quite impressed with you, possibly sacrificing your own iPhone to port some of the new features back to 1.0.2!
you sir, are a braver man than I!

    , don't remind me.

Right now, things aren't looking good. It turns out that the lockdown folder isn't what caused the restore mode to activate. I find this odd, considering that I copied most of the important stuff, like stuff that might prompt a restore, without it happening, but when I copy the whole /System/Library/ folder, it happens. I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with a check on the bootloader and the SystemVersion.plist file.

This is going to turn tedious fast if I have to restore every time I want to try to scp over another file (or one less file ).

I would really love it if someone could share the workload, *nudge, nudge* .

Well, i've officially lost count of how many times i've restored today. If it encourages anyone to join me, I have replaced some pretty important stuff and still haven't bricked my iPhone, so I would really, really love the help. :|
