Default Format Wars: Apple's AAC vs. LAME MP3

I converted most of my library to MP3 lately and now I just purchased an iPhone. iTunes has seemed to mess up most of my library and stuff, including missing a lot of my album art. It got me thinking that since my iPhone is going to be my main source of music listening, as well as my HTPC, that maybe I'll re-rip my CDs (I'm in Canada, I can rip and copy anything ). So, thought I'd get some people's opinions and see what people think is the better format for listening.

I use iTunes to manage my library and I prefer Mp3s cause it's better and widely supported (any device I buy can play mp3s)...

and it's good for listenning...but why iTunes missed with ur AlbumArt? what did u use to manage it before?

Smile AAC Sounds Better, MP3 has bigger compatibility

    Hi,

I bought a 60GB iPod a few years ago to use it as the center of my library while on the go. In order to support coverart those days my only choice was iTunes. And despite iTunes doesn't really please me... I haven't found a better replacement to feed music into my iPod.

If you plan on using iTunes, (iTV perhaps) then AAC seems to be better. I am equipped a very limited ear but I did some research back then and found many sources that had compared both formats and had concluded AAC to be superior in quality to MP3. I do rip all my music to AAC... but the music I do not rip myself is mainly in MP3.

I am thinking into building my HTPC and was considering Windows Media Center as a candidate. If this is also your option, let me tell you there is no built in support for AAC in either WMC or Windows Media Player. You can have AAC recognized by setting up MPEG4 codecs but I still have been uncapable of making ID3 info and coverart to work. Taking into consideration that having a cool visual interface is one of the greatest advantages of having a HTPC (compared to a multimedia disk for instance)... I think MP3 is a better option.

If you are concerned with sound quality but not mad about it... both formats will suit your needs.

i think aac is better, but yeah not universal, i also have a weird feeling that aac may sound better on the iphone cause it is apple, and also the same as you itunes seems funny bout some album art.

im considering going to aac, unfirtunatly i cant afford the space of apple lossless, which my earphones would make the most of!

yep, AIFF is deff the top choice is uv got the space. but deff go MP3 soley cause of compatibility. yesterday i had to reencode 25 songs on a work laptop which i run some sound effects\music cues for a small theater. turns out the buggy app. (soundcuessystems 9) doesnt support AAC. had to DL itunes, reencode, uninstall itunes. very very annoying....
