How sad it is that Apple has fucked this up so much. I mean, it's crazy that the iphone has problems functioning on any GSM network - why can't Apple get this right? Because they're too busy trying to protect their stupid business model than making sure customers' user experience is top-notch.

    What a mess.

Why wouldn't he? He bought an unlocked phone, not a semi-half assed unlocked phone. Secondly what if you wait and they never fix it? I wouldn't run it past them to be honest.

Apple France might want to believe different, but frankly if my soon to be unlocked iphone does not take a german Vodafone SIM, I will return the iPhone and complain to the regulators about this.
You should complain if this happens to you. Apple have decided to place profit firmly before consumer satisfaction, a decision that may well not effect the 'mass' brand perception in the short term, however the Apple Mac brand was built by the very people it is now upsetting the most (us). That loyal base of brand advocates will slowly turn their back on and ultimately reject this once innovative consumer centric brand and that WILL influence the 'masses' further down the road.

    Thumbs down

Indeed Apple are complete fools in this whole charade, they should have just priced the phones higher and forgotten about this whole locking business. OK, so perhaps they did it in the US to force some network upgrades but as the market is so much more mature here in Europe it just doesn't make sense.

It's my opinion that an unlocked phone sold in Europe must be exactly that, unlocked for all networks anywhere in the world. I'm pretty sure that some European law is being broken here and that Apple will end up looking even more stupid than they do now.

EU may and probably should sue Apple for billions the same way they did with MicroSoft:

    1) All arguments here claiming that Apple-Orange-whoever has the right to be monopolistic goes against EU policies which all the non-EU importers are well aware off
    2) It is impertinent of Apple to think that we are a herd of sheep who would let them push us around
    3) It damages the Apple brand recognition right now as a commentator here suspected
    4) On more mundane note: If I am transfered by my employer to Timbaktoo I should not have to buy a new phone and I should not have to use my French-British-German SIM card in Timbaktoo
    5) On even more mundane note: I do have a French phone, payed the unlockinf price AND fee, went home for holiday, and am unable to unlock it: Orange blames Apple, Apple blames Orange --- hopw is that for vomparing apples and oranges.
    6) I will complain to the French Telecommunication's Authority and Consumer Protection Agency

    My two cent here:

Apple tend to like Tuesdays for some reason, so maybe, just maybe, Stevie has his Ho, HO, Ho suit dry cleaned and ready to leave a very special surprise for all in iTunes on Christmas Morning!

Failing that, the update will in all probability be available at 8 pm CET on 14th of Jan 2008! - Steve has left the stage after delivering his Keynote address at Macworld 08!

I have thought about this a lot, and I think this use of the locked in model for the iphone indicates a major shift. Apple will continue to grow, but the thinking and contempt of their customers will lay the seeds of their destruction.

If you hang out on the Apple iphone forum, it is like a fascist forum everything gets locked or deleted.

I am a 17 year Mac user, and I can tell you this insane locking of the phone will get them a short term gain, but will lose them more business in the long term.

A phone is not an ipod. People in Europe travel a lot and pop in SIM cards a lot.

I resent that I have to jailbreak the phone to allow it to work with a legitimate unlock and I resent worse that Apple's forum stooges keep insisting the french iphone is only unlocked for France, and when this fact is disputed the admins delete the postings.

Apple are now too American centric. If they do not shift, they leave an big opening for competition.

In the end a computer or a phone is a tool. I have waited many years for an Apple phone and I am very disappointed in their overly greedy attitude.

They also stupidly made it impossible in Europe to buy as a gift, my brother in law I am sure would have bought on for my wife in the UK as a gift, except the phone would be a brick. How many sales like this have they lost?

The whole locking thing is just a greedy monopolistic act. I see this as the beginning of a change. A change for the worse. I am quite angry about how Apple has treated the iphone users.

I mean how bizarre, you pay 400 Euros for a device, yet on their forums the admins pretend that adding a application to YOUR device is some criminal act.

I really want to see if Steve will talk about this locking messes in 2008 Keynote and what will he have to say about it.
