Default Are firmware and iTunes upgrades safe for 2G unlocked iPhone?

I have a 1.1.4 OTB 16GB unlocked using ZiPhone back in Feb 2008.
    Still running iTunes 7.6.1.9
I noticed that there are new firmware updates to the iPhone and iTunes is now at version 8.0

Will upgrading the firmware and iTunes "re-lock" my 2G iPhone?
Am I missing out any cool features by not upgrading?

    Thanks.

    hmmmm??

Upgrade to iTunes 8 first. Then pick the tool of your choice (Winpwn or PwnageTool), create a custom firmware 2.0.2 and restore your iPhone to it.
Just dont upgrade to firmware 2.1 once it will be out on friday

One thing to add to my post. Apple has been working to prevent PwnageTool and Winpwn to work with "fresh" iPhones. No problem when an iPhone is pwnaged already.
If it is not already pwnaged, DFU restoring to a custom FW in iTunes 8 will result in an error. There is a workaround until a fix from the Dev Team will be available:
Use Quickpwn first on the iphone, then create the custom firmware with winpwn or PwnageTool and simple restore/recover to it in iTunes 8.
