Don't know how he pulled that one off. Both of you, try searching for ICC-ID in this forum (or ICCID). That should give you some insight in to why this should normally not work at all.
In short, normally if the ICC-ID does not match, Itunes will just choke and say that this is an invalid SIM. There is actually a fairly good thread on this subject.

I agree. Indeed, until I see many more posts confirming RobCoffee's I remain incredulous as to what he/she reports. One can't take at face value all posts.

Too late, I'm installing and will just revert to 1.1.4 if it doesn't work.
Had to do it -- curiosity killed the cat.

You can't just downgrade. You need to change iTunes versions etc... Idiot.
Curiosity also killed your iPhone.

Your insult was really called for.
It's outrageous that ppl tinker with their own devices.

That's not really the point, is it? The point imo is much more that they first ask for advice or for a reason why to (not) do something. People here try to help and even give a technical reason. To then just be ignored.
Insulting is not ok, but why ask if you want to try anyway. In such a case I would just try it first and then post my results. I for one hope that he succeeds (that would benefit us all), but I find it very unlikely that he will succeed.

I wouldn't be quite so quick to assume this. In the UK, the iphone carrier is o2. They have said on their website that non iphone PAYG sims will work in a UK iphone with no need for unlocking. So maybe firmware 2.0 now allows ALL o2 sims to activate an iphone. It would be the path of least resistance for them to do this rather than allow just iphone sims and PAYG sims. Hence a 'simplicity' sim may actually work to activate an iphone!
