I don't think apple will plant a virus on its own iphone. Also, if a virus is planted, I dont suppose delaying the time it actually executes helps anything at all. If a virus was planted, apple have nothing to lose to just execute it right away, and send out a clear message that hacking their firmware will not be taken lightly. Just my thought. Of course, your questions is kinda interesting, a possiblity, but common sense says otherwise.

I figured but wanted to at least throw it out there. Wouldn't doubt if they tried to do something and say "See the unlock DID harm your phone and now you have a brick."

Guys we should not go about trying anything reallly risky until the devteam has confirmed proper ways to handle the unlock and upgrade.
Just my $.02 USD
now only worth $.01 USD (I blame on GW Bush)

Actually its MY photoshop and an VERY fast one at that. I only used Gizmodo's AT&T death star. Put the apple logo on it and then slapped the whole thing on Obi Wan. Yes I am a Star Wars nerd and I love it.

Update 3:45PM: I've tried to activate the unlocked iPhone after the successful firmware upgrade, which is a must before testing if the unlock it is still there. To clarify, the 1.1.1 firmware upgrade works in an unlocked iPhone and it doesn't brick your iPhone. It just updates the firmware and returns it to activation state. However, after applying it, you have to reactivate it in order to test the unlock.
Activation with Independence doesn't work. When it tries to do the jailbreak, I gave it the new location for the firmware 1.1.1. It tried to use this firmware to do the jailbreak, but it fails, putting the iPhone into "Restore" mode.
--------
so what does that mean? does it work with 1.1.1. or not?

it means he took his unlocked phone, put the ATT sim in, updated it, update went ok, but the update also returns the phone to an activated state. to bypass the activated state, people commonly use independance, or similar apps, to jailbreak the phone and then upload a new lockdownd file, or some other method. looks like the jailbreak portion is broken though.

My advice to European / ROW users without multiple iPhones to play with - hold off completely on this until there's multiple and confirmed reports of the correct procedure to retain unlock and retain jailbreak.
There's too much misinformation from over-enthusiastic people mis-reading crap on the web and random tech blogs.
Bottom line is - if you're in the USA and you re-lock your phone, you can always trudge back to AT&T and get it working as a phone again by buying one of their contracts. Over in the ROW, if you lock your phone then it is *unusable* as a phone until a new crack comes out.
As a result I'd advise caution. The 'put your AT&T SIM in, update, then replace your third-party SIM' quote came from Gizmodo's page but I have severe doubts that this is as simple as it sounds. For a start, if it returns the phone to a non-activated state, then it doesn't matter if the SIM lock is still removed... you still can't use the phone. And if it's using the same anti-jailbreak as the iPod Touch (which hasn't been cracked, correct?) then it's as good as a brick to non-USA owners.
No, Apple were never going to irreversibly destroy peoples' equipment - but if you're outside the USA and using the phone on a local carrier then just wait.... unless you've got multiple phones to play with and want to find out. Unfortunately I only own a single iPhone, and it's now my main phone, so I'm not pissing about with firmware until I know the score
