Finally received a notification via SMS (also voicemail & missed call SMS issues)
I finally received one...
This message comes from an automated system to pay
you bill, however, it is not a number, when it arrives to my LG phone,
it is displayed as: MobilePay, today it arrived to my phone, and showed
the SMS icon as 1, however, when I open the SMS app, it crashes.
Had to reset settings and data to get SMS working again.
So the iPhone is capable of receiving them, but not the read/decode them?
Any ideas, since this is a good feature from my provider, if my phone is
off or it has no service, when you get in the network again, it the system
sends you an SMS telling that you had a missed call when your phone was
offline/no service, also if you cannot reach a number because it was off/no signal,
the system sends you a SMS when the other party phone is available/on/network again.
Any ideas or workarounds? I think that the message arrives, just, it doesn't know
how to handle/decode/read the message.

i think you'll find that the sms arrives onto your sim card immediately but cannot get through to your phone in the right format. this will be hacked in time, i'm sure.

JNS1, you're absolutely right and I confirm everything that you state. Numeric senders get through and alpha SMS' (i.e. with a sender id that is alphabetical) don't. The phone simply doesn't know what to do with them.
In Europe, I don't think this will be much of a problem since operator broadcasts, private banking, directory assistence SMSs, etc.. tend to have numberic sender values associated with them. That is, unless you use web type SMS senders like Skype, Google, etc..
Since many people on this forum still don't have an activated iPhones (myself included), it'll take them all a few days to identify the problem and I'm sure that a fix/workaround will come as a result of this next week. Thus, stay tuned.

Unfortunately it is a problem even in Europe. Many operator originating notifications do not get through. So far I have tested Swisscom (CH) and TIM (I).

I stand corrected. Apologies. Once my iPhone is up and running on my operator's network, I'll be able to see what's happening and report back. Currently, I'm blind as a bat and since I can't really simulate an SMS, it's really hard to comment.
Perhaps someone else out there can provide us with more details regarding the mechanics of how the SMS app receives messages so that I can get a jump start into looking into a possible fix. I have an idea what it may be -- a VALUE setting in the .plist file -- but once again, this is only speculation for now.

I've been looking for values but so far nothing. I have a feeling that it has to do with visual voicemail. Now if I only could find a way to turn vm off...
