Default A few questions for UK users

    Hello,

Here's some quick questions for the UK users who have unlocked their iPhones via the iUnlock method that was posted on engadget, etc today (pretty sure that's what it's called).

    1. Do all of the features work, including visual voicemail? If not, which one's don't?
    2. Where did you purchase your iPhone?
    3. Would you advise waiting for the EU release of the iPhone, buy one then unlock it or purchase it via O2? I currently have an Orange contract that runs out in January but I'm willing to start a new one and continue paying for the Orange, or unlock the phone and use the Orange contract.

Thanks. If you've got any other comments let me know

Default I did it, and i am in the UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, just to say to fellow UKers, I unlocked and am on Vodafone UK. I used the latest version of iNdependence, then followed this guide: http://iphone.unlock.no/ together with the brilliant webisite by Mark at http://www.hacktheiphone.com.

I did have some issues for around 10 minutes where I was originally following another tutorial here: http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.ph...iPhone_iUnlock
which I found had a missing instruction. The zip archive used is also important as there are a lot of slightly different versions on the web. (Maybe as the day unfolded?)

The archive I used is linked on iphone.unlock.no

    I even fixed youtube!

The whole process took me around 90 minutes, slit over two nights. iNdependence part first (yesterday), terminal stuff tonight.

How do these Dev Team guys use that Terminal stuff!!!??? Its nuts!

    To the dev team:

I know you must get 1000s of emails, but so what, I wanted to say thankyou.

I followed this saga since the day before GeoHot's hardware unlock, I was on holiday in Maui Hawaii, and on the way back, on a layover at LAX, i saw your site (and the dev team wiki) and decided to go to Santa Monica in a cab to get an iPhone before my plane left!

Apple store gal said I was nuts... I'm from London.

Your site and your work on explaining the whole damn thing is a work of amazing dedication. Amazing skill and drive. Hats off to you. Seriously, the info you have distilled got me unlocked tonight.

I used http://iphone.unlock.no/ as well as your stuff and after some nerves, I unlocked via iNdependence and then the terminal instructions not the beta app. (Hard Core!) For me, this is incredible. I am a graphic designer, not a programmer!

Your instructions not just today but since I was on vacation have got me up the learning curve.

I want to buy you a beer.

I'm sending you half the iphonesimfree cost and the other half to Mark at www.hacktheiphone.com.

You're all geniuses in my book. Congratulations.

    Get some sleep!

    Hiya,
I'm in London, on TMO (soon to change thank God)
    Visual voicemail does not work.
Bought my iphone on ebay from a guy who had just come back from NYC.
I personally want to use the iphone NOW. I love music and an iphone is just perfect for me. I suppose it depends how long you're willing to wait, and also your tech knowledge and patience (going through old forum threads and reading up on what you have to do).
It's all been a bit quiet as to when they're going to release the iphone - and so far I'm not even sure if an official partner has been agreed in the UK, I saw the article about 02 but that was "they are close to signing a deal" not that anything had been confirmed.

    What exactly is visual voicemail?

Im on Orange UK and my voicemail icon connects to orange answerphone fine. If a call is not answered and they leave me a message then I get a 1+ on the phone icon and a red dot on the voicemail icon.

Does this mean visual voicemail is working perfectly on Orange UK?

It where you can see a list of voice mails and you can click one. You dont have to listen to them all at once or wait for others to finish.

Visual Voice mail is specific to AT&T and simply gives you a email/text like msg indicating who the voicemail was from.

There are several threads on voicemail. Normally voicemail will just point to your carrier as normal. Some people were having notification issues and others were simply using minicom to update and point to their respective carrier's voicemail no.

I suggest you search the threads for voicemail if you need assistance but in any event unless you are with AT&T don't expect visual voicemail which is not that special anyway.

    As everyone else said...

everything works fine, even youtube (after a bit of tweaking or using the new version of Independence on the mac (version 2.2 I think) except for visual voice mail.

Also did a little bit of tweaking to get the phone number format to display correctly (01234 567890 instead of the USA format...) easy to do if you look around on the forums as its just a case of editing a preference file.

I'm on vodafone and managed to get the voicemail button to dial my voicemail using the instructions on the Wiki. http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/ind...icemail_Button
Not visual voicemail, but good enough for me.

So, I'm happy. The only thing left I think is to figure out a way to get the phone to alert me when there is a new voicemail message. for some reason Vodafone's voicemail textmessage alerts don't come through on the iphone.

Also I'd like to find a way easily turn edge on or off (currently being worked on by others).

I have a sneaky suspicion however that after the release of the iphone in the UK, if you're on O2, visual voicemail will probably work fine.

I bought my iphone from the NY apple store on 5th Avenue. Managed to get a $200 refund as I purchased it just before they dropped the price, so will hopefully be a fair bit cheaper than the UK model.

If I were you I'd wait until after the announcment during the week and see when they are going to be released in this country.... who knows what new goodies might or may not be included on a newer model phone....

    hope that helps!

Firstly, Orange have currently the most compatible network to what the iPhone is expecting (AT&T) by the looks of things. For a start, the voicemail indicator that Orange has had for ages (i.e. on most phones, displays an icon indicating you have voicemail) works on the iPhone. Orange also have upgraded their GPRS to EDGE in some areas (there is apparently EDGE in London, I have heard) - also when you roam in Europe, Orange in France and Switzerland have EDGE IIRC.

So you may be worth sticking with your Orange contract rather than moving to O2 if you're happy with your current level of service. I'd just moved from Orange to Vodafone before getting my iPhone because of the high cost of data with a voice plan on Orange - you will NEED to work out a decent plan because you will be using more data on the iPhone than you used to...

Other info that may be of use to UK users - Vodafone's outdated voicemail notification (i.e. it rings you back, or sends an SMS - and the SMS send notification doesn't seem to work on the iPhone currently) is in the middle of being upgraded RIGHT NOW according to my business Vodafone account manager - she has said that Vodafone are changing their voicemail notification to the same type of system that Orange use, and it's a rolling upgrade so it may happen at any time to your account (don't need to contact Vodafone). It will be interesting to see whether this immediately works on the iPhone.
