"Erase All Content and Settings"?
Hello.
I have a jailbroken iphone 1st gen running 2.2. For some reason I am no longer able to charge or sync it any more via USB, but I can still charge it via Firewire.
I've tried the "Reset All Settings" command in the "Settings", "General", "Reset" tab on the phone, but it made no difference.
I'm wondering if I try the "Erase All Content and Settings" below it, will the phone then be fully restored to factory default settings and become unjailbroken?
What I'm afraid of is that if I do this and it doesn't repair the USB functionality fault, I have no way to jailbreak the phone again and make it usable.

Dont use the "Erase All Content and Settings" on a jailbroken iPhone or when Cydia is installed, it will stuck in recovery.
DFU restore to Apple stock firmware 2.2.1, no problem cause you are on an iPhone 2G. If the problem is still there after DFU restore it is most likely a hardware probelm.

Thanks. Unfortunately though, I cannot get into DFU mode because the iphone is not recognising the usb connection.

Make sure to have iTunes 8.1 installed
then
- connect phone to computer
- shutdown itunes
- turn off phone
- hold power + home for 10 sec
- after 10 sec, release power/sleep and continue holding home
- keep holding home until itunes starts and detects the phone
- screen on phone is black
You`re in DFU mode then

Something maybe wrong with iTunes. If the screen is black you are in DFU for sure. Are you on a Mac or windows, which iTunes version?

I suspect it is a hardware fault on the iPhone because it will not charge thru usb either. I have tried different cables and computers and always the same: nothing...

Thanks for your help, anyway.

Thanks a Million
I ran across these forums shortly after my "spare" 3G also began to act screwy. It was handed down to me with a cracked screen, but still worked. So I restored it to factory settings and proceeded to jailbreak it. Later, noticing the previous owner's number still in the phone, I pulled out the sim card, then went the "Erase All Content and Settings" route. Ended up with a black screen, with the apple in the middle. And nothing else. iTunes couldn't find it either.
Volkspost, I followed your instructions, and was able to get the phone restored back to its factory settings. Kudos to you for your help! I'll be reading these forums regularly from now on.
