I've already enabled options for EDGE, but it's the fact that Safari will not connect to the Internet when I use EDGE Apn, user and pass. It will only connect via payandgo.o2.co.uk

Is this related to the fact I'm using PAYG, if so is there any solution?

    Thanks.
Yes, it is related to you using PAYG. I'm on O2 PAYG myself and have had many headaches because or O2s crippled service.

Safari won't connect using the EDGE APN as EDGE isn't enabled on O2 PAYG accounts at this moment in time. You will still be able to browse safari using GPRS.

Also, it might be worth mentioning that you won't be able to download email in mail using GPRS - this is because O2 doesn't allow its PAYG users to download anything other than O2 emails (At least in my experience and what I've read).

The reason you can only connect with payandgo.o2.co.uk is be cause you are on Pay And Go, the others are for when you have a contract with o2. If you want something differnt, try going on a simplicity plan and adding a bolt on for the unlimited internet. This is what i did when i got my iphone and it works a charm.

And thanks Volkspost... got it sorted.

The PAYG settings I used in the GPRS fix are:

    APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
    Username: payandgo
    Password: password

If those don't work then as I said before try looking for O2_PayAndGo_GPRS_iPhone_1.1.3.rar on google. In the file is a preference.plist and proxy.pac and instructions on where to place them on your iPhone. This fixed the problem for me and enabled me to connect via GPRS.

    Hope that helps,

    Ash

I downgraded my firmware just to be sure it's not firmware related, and put in the APN settings you gave me..

Now when I attempt to connect to the internet, Google for example, I get the error "Safari can't open the page because the network connection was lost".

Is it because I have no network coverage in my area (There is an o2 mast on top of my school, and I always get an EDGE 'E').

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks again again!

What firmware are you running now? Rather than putting the settings in manually use the method i mentioned in the previous post. That should sort out your problem - it's worked for me on both 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 - manually putting the settings on used to cause problems

    1.1.3

    Do you mean the "O2_PayAndGo_GPRS_iPhone_1.1.3.rar"?

If so, I tried to find that on Google, can you point me to where it is please?

I think it's still hosted online at http://rapid$hare.com/files/87009312/O2_PayAndGo_GPRS_iPhone_1.1.3.rar

Once it's un-archived follow the instructions in the readme file and then reboot your phone. You should then have working GPRS via PAYG.

I did what you said, and it worked!

Thanks for all the help, but I think I'll be looking at Simplicity after the month has run out..

Has anybody got experience with EDGE? Is it a lot faster, and worth the upgrade?

    Thanks

    Glad it worked for you.
Just remember if you change to an O2 simplicity contract you'll need to use the old settings again to get it to work properly.

This articles for EDGE vs GPRS was from a Yahoo Answers question. It's based on American services but I assume it's the same or at least similar:

"Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) 2.5 Generation (G) is faster than the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) 2 G. GPRS's speed is limited to approximately 20 kb/s whereas EDGE is about 60 kb/s. Efficiency is the same since they are both on the same cell site, its software related. EDGE is available in the US with at&t Wireless, and T-Mobile, the two largest GSM providers. Really the only difference is speed, GPRS was an older technology, and EDGE was a slight enhancement to it. The next was Universal Mobile Telephony Service (UMTS) 3 G which has a speed of about 384 kb/s. Now the newest with at&t is High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) 3.5 G, which has speeds near 7.2 Mb/s and reduced latency with usage very similar to high speed internet that you would experience at home."
