I'm getting a "Cannot connect to YouTube" message every time I try. I can use safari, stocks, wheather , and Google Maps perfectly fine but not YouTube. Perhaps it needs to be connected through a AT&T/Phone connection as well even though your using wifi?

In the UK, it also says it cannot connect.
I have no idea why it won't use WIFI like weather/stocks/everything else.

i dont have the technical answer but i think the youtube app looks for EDGE to determine what quality of video files it will send to your iphone.
if you are on EDGE, the youtube video quality isnt as nice as WIFI.

i cannot say this for certain yet but i believe that the iphone youtube service runs through apple servers on the backend which convert the youtube video to H.264 on the fly. it will probably require a firmware hack+ server to get this working on the iphone without an att plan. now if i was a network/router guy i would get to sniffing the traffic and seeing where it goes.
how about a redirect hack for a router that sends the youtube requests to a free server that performs the same functions...

to rob: that's not accurate -- youtube is converting all of its videos to h.264. They are not converted on the fly.

I just did a test with an activated phone in the US.
I pulled the sim and turned it back on, connected to my WiFi and was able to pull videos from YouTube with out AT&T network.
Questions:
Is everyone having this problem outside of the US?
If someone has the email working on a WiFi then send your self a link from your PC and then open the email on the phone. This will launch the video player on the phone.
Does it work this way?
What happens if you go to YouTube in Safari?

I just want to add to the quoted text below. I live in Canada. I activated my phone normally... My YouTube works just fine, in Canada, any way I do things:
1) With original AT&T Sim
2) With a Rogers Sim
3) Without a Sim at all.
I was chatting with someone about this on fusion.osx86.hu about this already... There must be something in the proper activation to enable YouTube usage...
Sorry I can't offer a solution to the problem however, it is activation related and not server or something...
Cheers.

I'm located in NYC, US and am having this problem, perhaps it is related to the hack as people are mentioning. I have a activated iPhone through the hack w/ no ATT service, only using wifi and cant connect to YouTube when activating it.

UK guy here, just tried to access You Tube in Safari and load up a video and it says (where the video would normally be) "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. (link)"
