Disappeared SMS conversation
I've almost accepted the fact that it's gone, but now I want to know what happened. Here's the story.
I had an SMS conversation going on my iPhone for well over a month now. It was something that I wanted to keep, so I hadn't deleted it. Recently, it was to the point where it would take 2 seconds for iPhone to open the conversation, so it was quite large. Today, it's all gone. starting over from scratch.
I checked the last backup from yesterday (decrypted and opened the sqlite files from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup) and much to my surprise found nothing from this conversation. I found other conversations that I know are fairly recent, and I'm sure there should be entries from the missing conversation in there, but there is nothing. One thing that I had read was that when deleting a conversation on iPhone, it doesn't actually remove it, just no longer displays it in the SMS app (much like many databases, it just flags it as deleted I would imagine), so if somehow it had been cleared from SMS.app on the phone, I should still see it here, but alas no SMS messages. I grabbed the sqlite db that is currently on my phone and opened that up, I see all the new SMS's from the new conversation that started today, and I see all the old SMS messages from other contacts that are also in the backups on my computer, but none of the old conversation that I am trying to recover
If it wasn't completely crazy to think, I would say that someone had to have deleted the entries in the backup databases, as well as from the active database on my phone. This is why I come here, I'm wondering if this is known to happen? Does iPhone automatically clear a conversation after a certain length? Am I wrong about iPhone keeping deleted conversations? Has anyone else seen this?
I may have a backup on another computer that I'll look at later, I'm mostly curios at this point.
Did you ever receive any kind of help for this issue? I just had the exact same thing happen. I even downloaded an extractor that was able to pull my messages (even previously deleted ones) from a backup file but that one conversation is still missing. I am assuming that the size of the file has something to do with it but haven't found a fix for this as yet.
