    Default Disable EDGE

    Hi,

I just got an iPhone and activated it with a prepaid AT&T SIM I had. Everything works fine however, I'd like to disable EDGE as it sometimes seems to use it even though I'm on WiFi. I only notice this though when a message pops up that it took a couple bucks off the prepaid card...
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Has anyone tried calling up AT&T and requesting that EDGE be disabled for their account altogether? It seems like that may be the easiest way to do this.

Yes, you can ask them to block that permenantly.

You could also disable it by putting (temporarily) a fake name for your APN - no APN, no connection This way you're safe, and can reenable it whenver you want.

Disabling this via putting in a bogus APN seems like a good, easily reversible solution. I'll give this a shot later. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Zf do you have to change only preferences inside cd /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ or also PDPContext_0.plist and PDPContext_1.plist inside cd /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/? I'm asking becouse my edge doesn't even try to connect (tim italy with a modded sim)

You only need to change preferences.plist - you can then validate that your configuration is OK by rebooting and performing a baseband forced dump - the APN data used willl be listed at the end of the file

    No it's easy.

The APN is to be updated in /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist (either by retrieving the file on a desktop computer or locally with vi)

The baseband forced dump is explained at http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Phone_Codes - it's **5005*78283#

does the preferences.plist only get loaded on boot or could I just change the APN info on the fly if I wanna disable it? I'm using a prepaid card - and getting those random $0.01 transaction messages when I'm at home on Wifi is really gettin old.
