Default Did Apple invent the cell phone?

You might have heard by new that Time named the Apple iPhone the "Invention of the Year." I'm not going to dissect the magazine's reasons for choosing the iPhone--News.com's Tom Krazit already did that--rather, I'm more confused as to whether the iPhone should even count as an invention. As some CNET readers have contended, Apple didn't invent the cell phone, it just built its own version. And even if everyone agrees that Apple improved on the concept, should that count as an invention? What do you think?

Don't take the word invention too literal. YouTube was the invention of the year in 2006, and of course we all agree that youtube is not an "invention".

Regarding Apple "improving on the concept" point, I couldn't disagree more. The main reason Apple has came up with a such an awesome new piece of technology (multi-touch) is that they didn't "improve on the concept". Instead they started with a totally different concept, and that is what sets the iPhone apart from other phones.

Multi-touch has actually been around for a little while

Ignorant Apple fans think Steve jobs invents everything.
Next time will be the wheel!!
Don't take prizes too serious. Look what happened to the Nobel PEACE prize this year... given to a guy who was vicepresident while they threw bombs in Kosovo...and not a long time ago.But it was no surprise because they had given it before to a terrorist leader like Arafat...
Politics apart... the Time idea is quite laughable.
It is just a nice looking MP3 player with limited applications (till they decided to open it to developers) that happens to have phone.
Being the phone part quite simple one (no voice dialing, no MMS, no 3G, no good bluetooth, can't swap batteries..) anything mobile phones have had for at least 2 years.
But look it has an apple on it and I can surf my MP3 library watching the cover of my albums!!
PDAs, Palms and so were far more a great invention... sure they didn't got the prize (I can be mistaken on this).
Apple didn't invented anything. It just put together some pieces that were already invented.

I think the problem is people didn't know they could do the same things and iPhone does with other devices already on the market.Being focused promoting bussiness apllication. It is a failure to those marketing campaigns.
The only thing iPhone is better is in the web browser. If Windows Mobile have had a web browser as good as the Safari there would be no discussion.
A phone which take pictures, plays MP3s and can connect to internet and have a touchscreen...there have been around for a long time. Maybe not with a cool simple interface (but you can copy the Iphone interface with skins on the Windows Mobile world).

they've invented the iPod which means they invented the best music player.
they invented the iPhone which does not mean they've invented the cell phone. iPhone does best what Apple claims to do best, it's a great music player and also a video player, web browsing is great, it's got youtube and I believe it will get better and better just like the iPod.

Are you guys' really that ' tarded or is the hait just that dumbing? Last time I checked the "award" was for the IPHONE. Not for inventing a cell phone, mp3 player, touchscreen or what ever else you guys' are interpreting as. Last time I checked, apple was the only one that made iphones. A Swiss army knife was an invention. Id like to believe you guys can understand that, and understand the difference...... It didn't exist before, now it does, hence it was invented. By your logic ALOT of things were never invented because the components in it existed prior to its creation...... Get a grip of yourselves children.

Come on, guys... I'm sure you are capable of process this:
    - Cell phone not an Apple invention
    - mp3/mp4 player not an Apple invention
    - mobile internet access not an Apple invention
    - Internet web browsing not an Apple invention
    - entertainment and productivity apps not an Apple invention
    - multitouch not an Apple invention

Agree on all of these, but to put together all of the above in a handheld that revolutionized the way we interface with mobile phones/pda with an accelerometer to add precision, an infrared sensor to avoid touching screen on call and a finger tip way of surfing the Internet, among other things... That's an invention.

With an obtuse vision of inventions, we can say "what is cell phone, but a radio transmision like the ones at the beggining of XX century", oh... they made it portable; well "what is iPhone, but a cellphone like the ones of the late 80's", oh... they made it touchable, pinchable, desirable, integrated and cooler...
