DFU mode with Broken home button
Hello all,
I have a peculiar situation with an iPhone 3G in that the Home button is broken so I cannot perform the button combination to get the phone into DFU mode to jailbreak.
I want to jailbreak so I can install SBSettings and/or iHome in cydia so I can workaround this broken home button. Only problem is - can't get into DFU mode.
Does anyone know how to put the phone into DFU mode without using the home button? Maybe a software tool?
Thanks in advance!
Also, I've tried taking the phone apart and using a different home button but it looks like the connection on the board is fried. Apple wants $200 to fix it (replace the phone with a new one). I don't need a home button if I have iHome or SBSettings installed.

Do a search here in hackint0sh.
There's a software for that but I never remember the name. But it's around here somewhere.

I've been googling and searching hackint0sh but everything I found was for old firmware. The phone has firmware 3.0. Does anyone know a software tool that works with firmware 3.0 to put the phone into DFU mode?
Thanks!

You can send your iPhone for repair... Or you can refer to here and here if you want to DIY.
Good luck...

Thank you for the post. I already attempted this previously by taking the working button and connection to the board from another phone and trying it on this phone. It did not work. So the problem is with the board. They don't sell replacement boards as far as I know so I would either have to buy a "broken" phone on eBay to get a working board or just pay the $200 for apple to replace this phone.
However, I don't need a home button if I could just jailbreak this one and install one of the springboard extensions to workaround the broken button. Which brings me back to the question of how to send the phone into DFU mode without using the home button?
I tried the mothod here but that put the phone into recovery mode - not DFU mode. I believe redsn0w 0.8 will only work on a phone in DFU mode so recovery mode isn't good enough.
Thanks again!
Still looking for any help on putting this phone into DFU mode without pressing the home button.

It looks like the new redsn0w 0.8 jailbreak software now jailbreaks the phone from recovery mode instead of DFU mode! So I should be able to use the previously mentioned method instead of the button combination. I'll give it a try when I get home and post my results.

I'm having your same problem.. Did you manage to find a solution?

I just found a way..use an ipsw where you've copied applelogo*img3 over LLB*img3. You'll get bootrom dfu! (thanks to MuscleNerd). If you need more detailed instructions write back.

Please help!
Hey guys. I am experiencing the same problem. Need to put iPhone in DFU mode with 3.0 with a busted home button. I see the methods you both recommended but can't find the command line utility and don't know enough about the file structure to "use an ipsw where you've copied applelogo*img3 over LLB*img3" and get bootrom DFU!
Please provide step by step instructions.
Thank you!!
