So you're saying there are no tools available from cydia that would allow me to power my iphone 3g on/off without pressing the power button?

And also, I didn't quite understand what you mean by "deliberately corrupting a NOR file" and uploading the IPSW.

I downloaded an IPSW for my 3G iPhone that is running on 3.0.1 firmware.

I just would like to put my iPhone into DFU mode without having to press buttons, but the method without having to press buttons isn't working on my computer.

I have seen that you can jailbreak your iPhone with redsn0w 0.8 if your iPhone is in recovery mode, too, rather than DFU mode.

    Is this true?

No I was not saying that, there are tools in Cydia for powering off.

I was brief and overly technical, I assumed you had read this whole thread - the answers to your questions are there.

That is because as I explained earlier, that program you refer to is only for 2G phones and likely also older iPhone OS / Windows OS versions.

The only reliable way is to corrupt one of the NOR firmware images. This will send your iPhone into DFU mode.

Not for the 3G or 2G iPhone and 1st gen iPod touch, they all require DFU mode for jailbreak with redsn0w and pwnagetool.

Blackra1n uses recovery mode to jailbreak on all devices, but it only works with iPhones running OS 3.1 and 3.1.2 (and reports are that this technique is not always 100% reliable on 3G phones - although that might have been fixed in blackra1n RC3)

Are you jailbroken today? Do you have access to a mac/pwnagetool?

Read this thread properly before asking more questions.

    Default To clarify...

    Okay-

I have read the entire thread and this is what I took from it:

Basically, I have a 3G iPhone that has never been jailbroken before and its sleep/power button is broken.

I was confused about the firmware parts of it.
If my 3G is running on 3.0.1, can I just update to 3.1.3 on iTunes regularly?
Or do I have to put it in recovery mode with blackra1n then use a custom firmware?

Is it possible to go from 3.0.1 right to 3.1.3?

I need for someone to break it down step by step because I'm totally lost.

Sorry for the confusion- This is only my second time going through this process, and jailbreaking/unlocking my iPhone 2G was a lot easier (since all the hardware buttons worked).

    Thank you in advance.

    Default Uh-oh

    Yet another problem-

I accidently downloaded blackra1n and and pressed "make it rain" by accident.

It ran the software in my iPhone 3G on OS 3.0.1

I guess it can only jailbreak if the iPhone is on OS 3.1.2.

So now my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode (with a broken sleep/wake button).

How do I get it back to normal?

    Thank you

The process is not very complex to understand.

The IPSW contains some NOR files and three disk images.

    NOR images
small files that are loaded to the NOR on the phone
These control the early startup process, one NOR file is for example the apple logo that is shown at bootup.

These can be flashed without re-loading OS image. That is referred to as a NOR only IPSW.

The first of the NOR files to be loaded is called the LLB (or low level bootloader), if it is deliberately corrupted (in this thread, the example is to write the apple logo file into the place where the LLB should be) then the hardware failsafe kicks in and the phone goes to DFU mode (which is 100% hardware so it is always available)

Then you send the pwnage payload and finally can upload a custom ipsw.

This technique works with 2G and 3G (not worthwhile to use this method on 3GS) and has been only tested with pwnagetool on mac. Might work with xpwn on windows also. It won't work with redsn0w.

    The disk images are
OS image - will be loaded onto your phone - is stored in NAND flash ram
Update ramdisk - used during update/install to control the upgrade process. This ramdisk does not wipe existing data from phone
Restore ramdisk - used during update/install to control the upgrade process. Wipes all data from phone first.

You don't just accidentally download and run blackra1n. I did say that it only worked on OS 3.1 and 3.1.2 - if you had read and understood the whole thread, that would have been clear.

What do you want from jailbreak? Do you want to unlock? or just to run specific apps that are only available on jailbroken phones?

    I'm very sorry
Obviously, I'm not that great with this technical stuff.
But thank you for baring with me.

Anyway, I want to jailbreak/unlock my iphone 3g.
Am I able to unlock through cydia once my phone is jailbroken?

    and also-
all I need to do is get the IPSW so my 3.0 Iphone 3G and corrupt the NOR, correct?
As i mentioned, I don't have a mac, so will "xpwn" work with windows to perform the same actions pwnagetool would?

yes xpwn works in windows, however "performing all the actions pwnagetool does" that is a bit harder.
yes you can unlock once jailbroken

You can restore to original Apple iPhone OS 3.0 or 3.0.1. Do not restore to higher than that.

When the battery dies, it waits till the battery charges back to 10% before it tries to turn on.

i've had it plugged in for a day now
and it still hasn't turned on.

is it because it was in recovery mode when it died?
and how do I only restore to 3.0/3.0.1 with iTunes because it asks me to update to 3.1.3
