I believe all iReb does is make itunes skip the part where it checks for a custom firmware. It turns the dfu black screen to the white screen and then you are able to restore to a custom ipsw. I don't see how this can brick a phone. I had the same thing happen as the guy who said his phone bricked (unresponsive black screen and itunes no longer responds to the phone). All you have to do if that happens is wait for the battery to die and then the phone will show up in itunes again in dfu mode (took a day when it happened to me).

    Default your mileage my vary

this is how i finally got the iphone 3g into dfu mode. even though i had firmware 3.0 installed and had also edited firmware bundle 3.0 as outlined in this thread to get the phone prepped to go into dfu mode using pwnage, i could not get the iphone into dfu mode with pwnage 3.1.3 or 3.1 or 3.0.1 or 3.0 or 2.2.5 so i just went for the oldest pwnage, 2.1 and of course had to download firmware 2.1 run it through pwnage to create a custom firmware, which i didn't use, but it is the only way to get pwnage to prompt you if your iphone has been pwned before. when pwnage 2.1 prompted me to press the power and home button, i connected the iphone and it went right into dfu mode.

    hope this helps

I can confirm this works on my 2G

The 3.1 firmware + blackra1n have successfully jailbroken the phone and after that you can install any custom (i.e. unlocked and jailbroken) firmware through itunes!
All of this without even having to get into DFU mode. You only have to be in recovery mode through use of iLiberty.

If the iPhone has never been jailbroken before, it is necessary to pwn the device. Pwnagetool asks you about this at the end of making a custom ipsw. Redsn0w does this when you jailbreak. Both these require the iPhone in DFU mode.

Blackra1n only requires the iPhone in recovery mode because it uses a different technique to write the same pwnage code that redsn0w and pwnagetool write.

Once this pwnage code is written, the iPhone is pwned and you can restore custom ipsw simply by option (or shift on windows) clicking on restore in iTunes and selecting the ipsw. If the iphone is not pwned, you will get an error and the restore will fail with a custom ipsw.

So just to clear my understanding.

If my iPhone can't access DFU mode due to hardware issue or maybe other issues, the following steps need to be taken.

    1) Jailbreak the device using Blackrain. (this jailbreaking process will "allow" custom ipsw files to be installed??????)
    2) After jailbreaking, isntall the custom ipsw file build using pawnage tool?

Yeah, the second step is to "shift-restore via iTunes using a custom ipsw for your model iPhone made using pwnage tool"
