Just to be sure.. These are the right steps:
1) Put the phone in DFU(uploading broken firm)
2)Create the firmware in pwnage tool
3) When you'll be asked if your phone is already JB hit NO
4) The timers will start. It will ask first to turn off the phone, unplug it
5) WAIT.......When it says to hold home button for 30 secs wait about 10 secs and plug it back in..
6) Pwnage tool will tell you that you're ready to restore in itunes.

According to MuscleNerd, from devteam, he tested/discovered this on a 2G phone, so this trick definitely works on 2G phones as well as 3G phones.

Hello:
I just did all the steps you mentioned to enter DFU on iphone 2g (I used pwnage tool and a Macbook)...but apparently something went wrong, cause my iphone doesn't do anything. If I connect it to the computer it says an unknown usb device has been connected....the screen is black and the iphone seems to be dead. My question is...is there anything I could do to recover my iphone? Maybe opening this iphone and another 2g iphone, and do a copy of the file system...I don't know...do you know of someone who has done it?
thanks in advance

I had this when using purplera1n on a 2G iphone with broken home button.
You can try to let the battery drain completely and then plug it back in a charger or usb port. The phone should reboot itself and be in recovery mode again.

hello: I finally managed to get a macbook, install pwnage 3.0 (downloaded from the torrent file pointed at dev-tools)...etc...etc.
anyway, I modified ipsw (Iphone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw) to zip...(only had all_flash.m68ap.production inside it), extracted applelogo*.img3, renamed it to LLB...and overwrited the original LLB. Then I proceeded to upgrade the iphone firmware to the one I just modified....
I ran pwnage tool... I configured it and made the custom ipsw
It all works normally until the apple logo in the iphoneit's half full. Then itunes shows error 6 message. pwnage says connect device to USB and it's obviously already connected, I disconnect it and reconect it and it seems like the iphone it's not present....
I am doing everything exactly how it's written....Am I missing something? Please help me
thanks

I cannot get pwnage tool to pwn it for me when I try this. I get it into dfu mode successfully but whenever I try to time it right I guess I time it wrong. Exactly when do I plug the iphone back in to be successful?

I have the same situation above. Tried "md2719" six step but it says DFU failed. My iPhone screen is black after the crash restore which resulted in "error 6" but when it's attached to the computer, iTunes will detect that it's in recovery mode. But it just wouldnt work on Pwnage. Any one?

pwnage doesn't prompt you to hold the home button for 30 seconds.
It prompts as follows:
1. turn off the phone
2. Prepare to hold power and home buttons in 5 seconds
3. Hold power and home buttons for 10 seconds
4. Hold home button for 10 seconds
i am unable to get into dfu mode. please advise

Think I may have an idea how to do this without pwnage tool. Use the modified ipsw as described in the earlier posts in this thread to put the phone into dfu. Then use a program called iReb 3.1 instead of pwnage tool. It allows a way to get past the 1600 errors for custom firmwares. A simple google should bring up the link to iReb 3.1. I don't have the phone with the broken button anymore so can't test it out though.

thanks for the tip, but i have no idea how ireb 3.1 works and am afraid to try something as one guy already bricked his phone using this method with redsn0w. so seeing as how it's only recommended to use pwnage with this method, i think i will wait to see what happens. thanks again
