I restored the phone, ran redsn0w and used the utility to put the phone into recovery mode instead of doing the "off then home button press while plugging in step". The jailbreak ran without error!
I installed mQuickDo 3.0 to simulate the home button press. Success!

When you say the command prompt put you into recovery mode, do you mean DFU mode? Or did you somehow get redsn0w to hook you up straight from recovery mode?

You need to get a fresh ipsw, browse inside and overwrite the LLB files with the applelogo files. To browse the firmware i renamed it in *.zip and used stuffit archive manager, cause if you extract it and recompress itunes won't accept it. The 2 files you have to overwrite are placed in 2 folders, under Firmware/all_Flash/all_flash.m68ap.production and Firmware/all_Flash/all_flash.n82ap.production. Copy out the applelogo..img3 file rename it and overwrite the LLb file. Then rename back the firmware image to ipsw and restore in itunes selecting the new created firm. After restore is complete you'll get DFU.
From now on you can follow the normal Pwnage guides. When the DFU helper starts it will ask you to turn off the phone, disconnect the cable. Then the timers will start.. When it says to press home button for ten seconds wait about 6-7 secs and reconnect the iphone. Pwnagetool will find your iphone in DFU and tell you to restore in itunes with the custom firm.
..This worked for me.. The instructions I first posted were very synthetic, but actually that is what MuscleNerd wrote me on twitter. Anyway if you are in my same situation, with a broken on/off button, be careful. You shuold get it wright at the first chanche since you are not able (like me!) to put the iphone in DFU and eventually restore! This guide is intended only for people who want to JB with a broken on/off button.. I'll be happy to help anyone who needs advice, just write back.

So you're saying to rename the applelogo files as LLB files, thereby leaving no file named applelogo? just LLB files (with the applelogo data in them)?
-
No, i kept both files. Copy it out then rename with the LLB name, and then replace the LLB. You have to do this twice, with the different applelogo ad LLB files!

AH! So the final result will be - you have one file named applelogo and one file named LLB (in each folder), but all four files have the applelogo data in them? SORRY for the confusion - I just happen to have a broken off/on button and don't wanna take any chances in screwing this up!
-
The applelogo files are different so you will have 2 couples of applelogo and LLB files.. (so you won't have just 4 files named differently..) Sorry I can't reply anymore till tommorow morning cause I'll lose intenet connectkion.. I hope you got it! Let me know.. As i precised before in the other post follow the right timings in pwnage tool or you'll get error 1600 in itunes when restoring! Good luck..

Ok AWESOME. Thank you for your help - I did all the above, restored, and iTunes kicked me out with an error (6). I ran redsn0w as indicated and it picked up the phone and recognized it as being in DFU mode. Awesome, right?! Until...
It hung at waiting to reboot. I cancelled and tried again, same deal. Changed cords and USB ports, same deal. I read somewhere that unplugging the USB then popping it back in will move you past that prompt. Tried that, and....
Now I'm (seemingly) bricked. redsn0w won't recognize it at all anymore, nor will iTunes. It's non-responsive on the home button and, of course, the power button is dead.
Anyone have any thoughts what's going on here? Appreciate everyone's help, as always!

I'm sorry for what happened.. But actually i never told you to use redsnow, but pwnage tool! Using redsnow on a modified firmware would have messed up everything.. So did you manage to solve something?

@sebastianopirro is me, md2719, that's one of my twitter accounts.. I did as i told in my previous posts! What Olethros says is right only you cannot unzip (don't know in windows, but on Osx) and then rezip the firmware cause itunes won't accept it. I used stuffit archive manager to browse the archive and modify the files..

Only find Firmware/all_Flash/all_flash.m68ap.production
I can only find the Firmware/all_Flash/all_flash.m68ap.production folder?
From the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
