i have a very BIG problem:

my iphone 3gs was jailbroken by a friend, so that i could use it with any sim card (it says 3.1.2 and it has a pineapple startup logo so i guess that means it is pwnage tool)

i am using a macbook pro (os 10.6.3) with itunes 9.1.1

it has cracks in the display and a messed up sleep/wake-up button, thus it won't permit me to go into DFU.

i am eligible for an iphone swap at the apple store (i've been there today) HOWEVER he said that i voided my warranty. i can come back tomorrow with an apple OS and get it exchanged.

i have a big time constraint, as i bought my phone/contract in australia, but i am going back home to germany where i can't exchange my phones. by the time i return (1 month) the warranty will be expired.

can you guys please tell me what to do exactly to restore my iphone to the original apple OS? and please make it as easy as possible, i am a bit dumb when it comes to the techy side of things.

Just restore the phone with itunes. It will wipe the jailbreak away.

1.) i've been trying that already. it somehow gives me an error saying that the device is not built/eligible for this update?! (EDIT: okay, i've already read that this has to do with the fact that apple doesn't allow restoring to 3.1.2 anymore... does this mean i will have to update? will this brick my iphone?)

2.) i'm also currently downloading the 3.1.2 restore ipsw. does it make sense to use pwnage in order to swap firmwares?

3.) or would it make more sense to wait for the battery to die and then plug it in, hold the home button to get it into DFU and restore it that way?

4.) how about settings > general > reset > erase all content and settings ? would this lead to anything?

okay, i've just bricked my phone by choosing option 4.) ....what do i do now? iTunes doesn't recognise it anymore, nothing happens when i connect it and it's just showing the pineapple symbol

you should have just restored it to 4.0. If you are taking it back it doesn't matter if you update it. The only way I know of to get it out of the unresponsive state it is in is either holding power and home button (which you cant do) or wait for the battery to die. Once the battery dies and it is recognised again just restore it to 4.0

I want to get 4.0 but I need to go into DFU mode.

Any ideas on how to? Any programs in Cydia that will put my phone into DFU mode? I have a Windows 7 laptop and a Macbook Pro.

Your only realistic option is to:
Wait for pwnagetool to support 3G. Then you won't need DFU mode (as you are already jailbroken)

Pwnage tool does support iphone 3G doesn't it? You should just be able to download the most recent pwnage tool, create a custom firmware and since you are jailbroken you can just restore to that custom ipsw you made. As long as you are jailbroken with anything but spirit it should work from recovery mode (use recboot to get into recovery mode)

Pwnagetool 4.0 did not include a 3G bundle for iOS 4.0. However it was quickly replaced by Pwnagetool 4.0.1 which does include a 3G bundle for iOS 4.0

I created a custom ipsw for iphone 3G with pwnage tool 4.0 when it came out a few days ago. To my knowledge the only reason for the quick release of 4.01 was to fix the ibooks issue that people were having with the initial releases of pwnage tool and redsnow for 4.0.

Yes I just checked - I was wrong - you are 100% right, Pwnagetool 4.0 did support the 3G with a bundle. Not sure where I got my facts wrong on that.
