iNdepedance supports up to firmware 1.0.2 which is the latest firmware.

I'd also like to know how to find the firmware version of a brand new phone. There is no indication on the Box or iTunes as to what firmware the phone is running...

I'll report back if I find something...

Just restore it with 1.0.2 if it is a new phone and then it won't matter.

I had this same question when I was trying to activate my first iPhone using iNdependence. I couldn't figure out what firmware I had until AFTER I had it jailbroken and "activated" (and then it turned out to be 1.00 as shown on the iPhone's settings screens, as well as on the iTunes screen).

I then had iTunes do an upgrade of the firmware, which produced an error message on iTunes, and after that error message iTunes recovered the iPhone and updated the firmware to 1.0.2.

After this upgrade I had to re-run iNdependence to re-jailbreak and re-activate my iPhone. I'm sure there is probably a way to upgrade the firmware without going through iNdependence twice, but I don't know how to do it.
