Default Decoding an iPhone serial number

    Hi,

I have to explain an 75 y/o guy how to decode the serial number of an iPhone, so I have to make myself 100% clear to him.

I already read this thread, and there it is said, that the serial always starts wit a 7 and a letter.

So far, I stumbled over other threads, where people have serials, starting with a 5 or an 8 and have a digit as the second character.

So how can I describe an iPhone serial with its absolute basis attributes?

    Is this correct?

    1. - has 11 characters
    2. - third character is either a 7 oder an 8
    3. - fourth and fifth character are the production week
    4. - following are characters uniqe per iPhone with no special meaning

Are there more 'roules' that apply?

    Thank you.

I don't think that's accurate. The serial on my 3G is xx946xxxxxx, which would imply it was manufactured in November 2009. But I'd already owned it for over a year at that point! Great Scott!!

The serial number format is changing or has changed.

It used to be 11 digits, new version is 12 digits - new format is harder to decode without machine assistance.

In the old 11 digit format the first two digits refer to the factory that made the device. As Apple can stop using a factory or start using another, there's no hard rules about what numbers or letters can be used in the first two digits.

For iPhones, I have seen 5, 7, or 8 as the first digit. It used to be that a serial number like 5K meant the iPhone was refurb - but this has not always held up as truth

What you are asking for is illegal. It is against the rules of this forum to discuss criminal activities like changing unique identifiers on stolen/black market phones.
