    Arrow A couple of problems and a dilemma

    iPhone 1st generation 8Gb
    v1.1.2 (3B48d)
    Firmware: 04.02.13_G
    Jailbroken with Ziphone
    Windows Vista with Itunes v7.6.0.29

    First a couple of problems:

    1:
    Apart from the phone and iPod I do not hear any audio in any other installed apps. I have Ilog, Iphone Video Recorder, & Iphone Recorded installed but I do not hear any sound recorded with the latter two apps and Ilog does not give me sound notification of missed calls ETC, the phone and Ipod work OK with sound heard from the internal speaker and ear buds. It just seems to be recently installed apps that do not play sound.

    2:
    No matter how I try I can't get rid of the EDGE icon. I have installed (and now uninstalled) Bossprefs but it could not get rid of the icon.

    Now a dilemma. Apart from the above problems (which have only occurred within the last week or so) the phone has been working great on 1.1.2 What benefit (if any) would I gain by updating the phone's version and firmware.

    If I did update would I be able to re-install my favorite apps which are listed below?:

    Stumbler
    iLog
    Services
    Bosstool
    iSolitaire
    Iphone Video Recorded
    Iphone Recorded

    Do experts think an update would cure the 'no sound in some apps' issue

    If an update is recommended can anyone point me to an update tutorial?

    um........is not an answer

    I'll try an update. This is a good tutorial: How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.1 2G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows). Good luck!

    first of all I am not an expert so my solution is not a definite one, but if I were u I would do a DFU restore to 2.1, as upgrading will fix most of the common bugs, and most probably it will fix ur sound issue. The EDGE icon will not disappear as long as ur cellular network carrier supports this feature (although u have not enabled it). As for your apps there are alternatives to some of them in cydia on 2.1 (cycorder instead of video recorder and for the others am not sure).
    If u want to do a DFU restore, then u need to place ur iPhone in DFU mode. This can be done by connecting ur iPhone to ur mac/pc and close itunes, then power down ur device (hold the sleep/wake button until the slide to power off appears and then slide it). Make sure itunes shutdown. Now hold sleep/wake+home button for EXACTLY 10 seconds, after the 10 seconds release the sleep/wake button but keep holding the home button until itunes detect the iphone in restore mode (i.e the iphone screen will be black). If the apple logo appeared on the phone that means u have failed to enter DFU mode so u need to try again.
    As for upgrading/jailbreaking and if necessary unlocking and activating u can follow this guide (windows):

    First of all download these files if u dont already have them:

    iphone 2.1 firmware----> http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....6_Restore.ipsw

    3.9 BL----> http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin

    4.9 BL----> http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin

    quickpwn 2.1 for windows-----> http://www.zshare.net/download/1906202041cd7858/

    1) Create a new folder somewhere on ur computer and name it Pwnage then place all these files in it.

    2) Hold shift and at the same time click on the restore button in itunes and choose the firmware file u downloaded (be very patinet). After that is done u will get the slide for emergency call and itunes/cable screen (normally called locked screen).

    3) Close itunes and make sure that it is not running in the background, i.e no itunes icon is visible in the taskbar.
    When that is done launch quickpwn, it will prompt u to locate the firmware file, browse and locate it then click next.
    Now make sure that "add cydia", "add installer", and most if u want to unlock "unlock iphone" checkboxes are all checked, then click next.

    4) Now locate the 3.6 and 4.9 BL files, click next, next, it will say wait for ur iphone to connect in recovery mode, u must be very cautious in this step as soon as that is is done u should start pressing buttons, if u time it right u will enter DFU mode (just follow the on-screen instructions).

    5) If the previous step was sucesfully done all what u have to do is sit back, relax and be very patient. You should see a picture of a RAM on the iphone then a walking pineapple and finally the bootneuter screen. You're device will automatically reboot when bootneuter finish. Follow these instructions carefully and u should have an unlocked, jailbroken and activated 2g iPhone with version 2.1
    Feel free to ask me anything ur not certain about.

    P.S be very very VERY patient while bootneuter is running and no matter what do not interrupt it while it is flashing (even if takes more than 20 minutes) as doing so would probably end u up in a broken iphone. Also be very patient in all these steps especially when itunes is restoring/upgrading your firmware and do not use the backup itunes made as it will probably damage the phone, choose setup as new iphone. I am not responsible for any damage(if there is any) that happens to your phone while following this guide.

    Thanks for the reply's

    I've updated to 2.1 which has solved the sound problem.

    Now all I have to do is find replacements for iSolitaire & iPhone Recorder

    I've installed cycorder but it is not as good as iPhone Video Recorder
