Same question here. A newer sim that says 3g in an activated (any method) iPhone.

She then pulled another new SIM (it is blue and says 3G on it) from a smartphone (I think it was a 8125), and my iPhone worked fine.

So it appears that at the minimum, you must have a newer '3G' SIM from AT&T to get the phone on the network.
awesome! thank you! ok, so this establishes that there is no special iphone code embedded on the sim to lock it to the network. it just requires an at&t 3g sim.

that answers all my questions, thank you.

When I get a chance I am going to take my treo to a cingular store and try to get a newer 3g sim. Anybody have any suggestion how to go about this? Tell them my kid through it out?

You can just buy them. RadioShack sells them for $25, you just have to have them update your account with the new SIM.

I activated my iPhone on the pre-paid plan. I just stuck in a 3G Cingular SIM and it did not work. I am not sure that I want to try the DVD Jon method of activating the phone based upon another thread here where the guy can not restore his phone.
Once I input the Cingular 3G sim it said that the incorrect SIM was inserted and that it must be activated by connecting to iTunes.

    lunchboxfett,

Thanks for giving that a try. At least now we know it won't be that simple. The next big question is if the DVD Jon method will do the trick.

Just wanted to make sure that everyone understood that I used a Cingular 3G sim. I am going to try and get an ATT 3G sim next week.
Is there anyone in the Akron Ohio area that did the DVD Jon method on their iPhone? Maybe we could meet up and see if it works that way.

    Thumbs down

Got a new iPhone today, used the 'one-click' activation tool (worked great), and then tried my working Cingular 3G SIM from my BlackBerry Pearl. It didn't work.

Do you think they locked them to only accept the new ATT SIM cards?
