Question "Could Not Activate Cellular Network" JB 3GS 3.12 Modem: 04.26.08 AT&T 5.5

Hi guys, new to the forum here and really need some clarification & help. I've search the forums and google but noone seems to be in the same situation and I'm looking for a specific way to fix this... if anyone can help me it would be uber appreciated...

I've had a 3GS jailbroken via pwnagetool running 3.12 for over a year now. Lately I've been getting the "Could not activate cellular data network" error, accompanied by slow/no connection. I'd have to disable and re-enable my 3G in SBSettings to fix it, and then 5 minutes later... same problem. So I decided to restore my phone from scratch...

I restored my phone in iTunes 9.21 from my pwnagetool'd 3.12 IPSW, and did not restore a backup to lessen the variables at play. I activated my phone but now have no internet connection and no AT&T logo (although I read at dev team's blog that the no-logo is a known issue that doesn't affect connectivity). I cannot make phone calls AT ALL even though I have 4-5 Bars 3G... and I am still getting the "Could not activate cellular data network" error when using Safari, SMS, etc. Interestingly, I can receive text messages but cannot send them. In Settings->General->About, Network reads "Not Available," Carrier is "AT&T 5.5" and Modem Firmware is 04.26.08.

I'm on 04.26.08 as I want to be able to tether and it is my understanding that I shouldn't upgrade my baseband if I want to continue doing that. I know that higher basebands are unlockable (5.11, etc) but I'd rather not use any windows software to do so, and from my understanding the baseband version shouldn't affect my connectivity anyways, should it?

Also, what is the difference between carrier settings and baseband? iTunes keeps asking to upgrade my carrier settings, does this upgrade my 04.26.08 or AT&T 5.5, or both??? I really haven't been able to find clarification on this, I have a hunch that it won't touch my firmware but I want to be certain... I AM getting really tired of iTunes asking to update my carrier settings every time I plug in my phone...

Basically, my goal is to stay with 3.12 (not digging 4.x just yet), and to be able to stay on OS X when doing restores (preferably pwnagetool), and be able to tether without using an app like MyWi (it seems to mess up my SB tether toggle).

Sorry for such a wordy post, but yeah, hope I communicated everything clearly. Anyone who can help steer me in the right direction is freakin awesome

I'm a bit confused about two things you haven't clearly stated:

    1. You are on AT&T - does this mean you don't need an unlock? I.e. is your iPhone a regular AT&T model/locked to AT&T?
    2. What did you answer in pwnagetool when it asks "can you activate the iPhone normally via iTunes"? Or did you use expert mode?

    Thanks for the reply,

I am on AT&T but would prefer to keep unlock as an option for when I resell it.

In pwnagetool I use expert mode & activate in iTunes, not using the dummy activation method that pwnagetool provides.

And just to update, I took the phone into AT&T store a few days ago (jailbroken, but not visually obvious) and they swapped out the sim card... still having the same issue though. I am considering either upgrading the firmware from 04.26.08 by doing a full "legit" iTunes restore (no pwnagetool) and seeing if that helps, or alternatively restoring to a newer iOS without upgrading the firmware and taking it to apple to see if they feel like helping even though the applecare is expired...

Glad to hear you had control of the situation - hope you didn't mind the n00b questions but I can never be sure how much posters know about the tools they are using.

I have a 3GS and still run 04.26.08 on iOS 4.1 - have used PwnageTool the whole way since 3.0. No real problems except the carrier logo is missing (this is an apple bug). So you might have a hardware issue.

No worries man - and yeah, I'm thinking the same thing considering I haven't been able to find a single person online with the same problem... I just went to Apple store and they told me that the only repairs they do are to replace the glass or swap out all the internals, which costs $200... might as well get a 4 if hafta pay that much... do you know off-hand what version of iOS the phone's are shipping with now? Is it still 4.0 or is it the latest?

I've not seen any concrete reports but 4.1 has been out long enough to make it very likely that all new iPhone 4s ship with 4.1 now.

    I remember having this problem.

You need to activate it before you jailbreak it. But it wasn't that easy because the phone wouldn't boot in to the activation screen. Yeah I remember that one.

Try using iRecovery....damn it was so long ago that I can't remember exactly how I did it. I know i did it somehow, but it took a while.

    Hmm....trying to remember...

Explain to me exactly what your iPhone displays on it's screen when you've just restored it to the downgrade OS.
