    Default Constant EDGE usage?

I was just curious if the iPhone constantly connects to EDGE as I am going to be getting an iPhone in Canada and I know how insane Rogers data charges are.

I know people get those huge bills so I was curious if it was automatically connecting and polling for information or if it's only if you set it to check your email.

    yes, GPRS/EDGE is always on.

An approach to stopping this behaviour is to change your EDGE settings to an invalid APN, only correcting it when you need to go online.

    Lol, no. Wifi takes precedence.

Are you really sure, that it's always CONNECTED? Afaik it only shows E for EDGE available. It only CONNECTS, if you use Weather, YouTube, Stocks, Mail or Safari and Co.

On Moto Razr and some HTC Windows Mobile mobiles, there is also an constant GPRS Symbol, but only to show the availability.

True, some do, others don't. Under WM2005 here are two icons for GPRS/EDGE, the box, and the fully coloured box when its actually online. At least there is on my HTC Wizard.

However I have not seen any "on demand" style reconnection stuff in the communications library, etc. I would suspect that it is likely to be pretty much always on rather than on-demand.

Having said that, there is very little difference between the two these days, the main reason it used to be the case was for power consumption reasons.

It seems to only connect on actual usage. It gets a NATted IP from AT&T in the 10.85.*.* range (at least, here in Boston it does). However, if you run ifconfig, then let the phone sleep, then run ifconfig again, you'll note it has no ip until you actually connect to the net, and then it grabs a different ip. I believe this is why the connection initially lags - it's negotiating a DHCP address.

I'm back in Canada now, but when I was in FL a few days ago, I picked up a prepaid plan --- The first day I did 3.5 MB of transfer and the second day I was at 2.X... Only reason it wasn't higher was because I was using wifi as often as possible. Even with your phone sitting idle in your pocket, if will check email (if you set it to) and other stuff happens behind the scenes... I'm sure you'll have an INSANE bill with Rogers if you don't disable it. Hopefully Rogers comes out with a reasonable plan when the iPhone launches in Canada....

I think so too. Because when I'm on Meebo on Safari and I have to switch back to SMS for a while, I get disconnected when I go back to Safari. I assume the EDGE connection is dropped once I leave the app.
