...now that hardware unlock is achieved by Geohot & Company, now it's the Dev Team's turn to surprise your supporters all over the world with the software unlock....
..hope that your transparency in your work will improve so that the people who supported you in their own little ways will feel like something is still being accomplished ...

    Hmm, well, I don't think it's a race.

The way I understand it, it's sad the split ever happened.

Geohot did amazing things with hardware, the original dev team with software. They're meant to work together

    Exactly Zf_.

Anyone on here who's been in the IT business long enough to manage teams of talented developers / hackers will know the egos involved and the race for 'kudos' etc.

It's a shame there was any schism in the first place.

Now, assuming George isn't bullshitting us (which he really shouldn't be, since it'd completely destroy his ego when found out) - the next step is a software hack that is feasible for mere software hackers to apply. I know feck-all about hardware and electronics so I'm limited to messing about with code.

But I'm waiting for this, since it looks like my carrier in the UK isn't going to be the 'chosen one'... still waiting for a TurboSIM but if the 'dev team' can stop playing ego games with Mr Hotz (or vice versa, certainly Hotz seems to be more willing to be in the public eye) - we should have a usable firmware hack.

This is a big deal to a lot of people, and as a result there's money available. The true test of both camps will be whether the code / technique / hack is available to everyone for free, or whether it becomes commercial...

Remember that the proportion of people in the US who want an iPhone, but refuse to use AT&T GSM (when T-mobile is patchier and not as well supported, and is the only alternative IIRC), is **nowhere near** the proportion of people in Europe who currently have contracts with one of the other **many** carriers than the single-carrier-per-country Apple model. In other words, let's say as per current rumour that Vodafone aren't in. Vodafone have a LOT of subscribers in Europe, and given their recent data rate deals you can bet that many will not want to cancel contracts and jump ship just for the iPhone - they'll want to run the iPhone on Vodafone. Vodafone are big and pretty reliable. There'll be a market for SIM-unlocked iPhones in the UK at least and I'll bet the rest of Europe too.

So, who's open and free, and who wants to profit? The ongoing saga on the 'dev team' wiki about the Installer.app being 'closed source' and 'for profit' along with FUD from an IRC chat seems to suggest that the 'dev team' are in it for freedom only... but that's not what Hotz seems to insinuate.

Fucking egos, it happens in every IT project with talented people.

If I were the dev team, I would make people pay, but that's just me.

I won't mind paying/donating as well as long as their method is simple & can be understood/done by "morons" & "dummies" like myself, count me in!:p

    I second your opinion.

One thing though is that they have already announced that it will be free. But I'd say make it a "mandatory donation".....those are popular nowadays.

Free solutions are OK but people need to show their appreciation and provide a little help if they "profit" from these free solutions.
Unfortunately many people think that the word "free" means that there is no need for donations or other ways to show their appreciation.
I don't want to know how much money people threw away by ordering scam unlock solutions for 25 or 50 $, by buying stuff for the SuperSIM or TurboSIM methods or simply by asking dealers or other people to activate their iPhones for money.

We shouldn't even have these discussions, any "decent" human being who profits or profited from the Dev Team's work should know what he/she needs to do. Period.
