As a matter of fact it didn't stop working until I decided I wanted to sync the calendar and contacts.

As a matter of fact it didn't stop working until I decided I wanted to sync the calendar and contacts. I really don't need the sarcasm and smart a$$ remarks. I am merely stating something that happened with my iphone and wondering if someone was knowledgeable enough to answer the question of why I could originally drag and drop. If you don't know than just say you don't know or go find someone else to b*tch and moan at.

I could drag and drop to my original iphone. I just upgraded to the 3G today and couldn't figure out why I couldn't drag music straight to the phone. that is why I found this forum in a google search. I can verify that with the original i WAS definitely able to drag music straight to the phone without this crappy sync method.
Why would they take away the easiest way to manage music on the iphone ?

i realize that this is an old thread, but for the sake of anyone who stumbles across it, i just want to say that drag and drop is most definitely supported by iTunes. i don't believe it was at first, but it is now and it was at the time of the OP's post.
twice i have had issues with losing drag and drop capability after having to switch to a new computer. to reenable it, you have to click on the list item for your phone (e.g. Lil's iPhone) and scroll down to the options section of that first summary tab. there will be a check at the bottom for "manually manage music and videos". click that. you will get a message that says something about the iPhone being synched to another computer and that you will have to erase the music on the phone and resync to this computer. so if you had any music on your iPhone, you will have to reload it. i believe that although you can authorize five computers, one is still designated as your main computer that you sync with and it is the only one you can manually manage your media files with. don't quote me on this though. its just how it seems to me, but i don't have any hard evidence to back that up.
anyway, hope this helps someone (maybe even myself, since i always forget how to fix the problem and have to figure it out again).
