    Default Canadians Importing iPhones

    Hey All,

I did some searching previous to see others experiences on how much duty they had to pay and such but didn't find too much.

Today I went to Bellingham and got an iPhone. The total cost to import was just GST+PST for a total of $92.89 in Taxes. They at least didn't charge duty. So the total Canadian was $714.56+GST$42.87+PST$50.02 for a total of $807.45

There is the possiblity of them charging you actual duty rather then just taxes though, so your experience may not be 100% the same. But with any luck, and if you are there longer then 4 Hours, you may not get charged at all.

This is not brain surgery...have a friend in the US purchase one for you $ 599.00 plus the state Tax...so $ 640.00 and then wrap it up and ship it Via US Post.
Have them say that it is a Phone and that the Value for the phone for customs is $50.00 ...put this on the shipping manifest so everything is on the up and up. A few days later and Canada Post will deliver your new Phone by hand to your home. Sign for it and Canada post will hand you your Brand new Phone......thank you very much. Please come again.. ha ha

Declaring the value under $60 CAD to avoid customs fees doesn't always work. Sometimes they randomly open up packages and will still hit you with a customs fees if they see that what was inside looks more than what the sender declared it.

I used to always have US sellers mark items under $30 and RANDOMLY I would still be hit with a customs fee.

Oh yeah, you also forgot you have to have the package marked as a GIFT.

Is it worth risking customs catching you with your $700 beautiful iPhone and then charging double duty and taxes and possibly confiscating it because you didn't declare it?
    I don't!

I am actually going down the US tomorrow to pick an iPhone up and I'm going with my girlfriend. We're going to make a day out of it, so does that mean that we wouldn't have to pay anything coming back through? I mean, we can claim that it's both of ours so it'd be half mine and half hers so approximately $250 USD each.

Or I could just take it out of the box and put it in my girlfriend's purse and pretend like we already brought it down.

NOTE: The last part was a joke, calm down.

Exactly, I don't care that much. I could have got one off Craigslist for $745, but I don't trust it as much as getting it in person from the store with a REAL receipt. A friend was going down today so I figured I would join them.

That and what many of you are suggesting is AGAINST THE LAW and carry some pretty heavy penalties if caught.

No really that is a good idea.. I've done this on 2 occasions already with no probs.

I'm very well versed on getting stuff over the border. You need to always declare something. They're not stupid. If you're just there less than a day, if it's under $100 per person or $200 total they'll leave you alone. The first time we did about $190 in additional shopping so we just declared that, had the recepits ready to show the gaurd and no taxes or probs. 2nd time with an Iphone, we just declared $30 that the gf spent, and he was like... "just $30.. that's kinda a waste of a trip isn't it??", I just joked that everything I wanted to get was too expensive still..

A couple years ago however I did get my car searched, however. I was going over to put snowtires on my car, but getting a guy I knew over there to do it as they were delivered to his house. Well we were going over at like 2am, so they oviously found that a little susp, and told us we were the lucky # (every 100 they said, yeah right) to get a search. (Even though we were completely honest about everything) Well they search the car pretty good, but they never checked our person. So they never looked in the gf's purse either. Moral of that story is worst case situation, as long as it'll fit in a purse you're probably safe!
