Default Canada: Fido, Rogers, Videotron smtp & mail

My provider is Rogers. My email is outside Rogers. I have problem with the smtp. Since Rogers block any outside SMTP , i have to use the Rogers Smtp in my mail account. As soon i am connected to a wifi, the Rogers Smtp won't work under this wifi. I would like to use a generic smtp like smtp.com, but Rogers won't allow it.
I met someone with a Fido service, and he told me that Fido won't block outside smtp service. Is it true ? Anybody here found it more easy with Fido, considering that a lot of wifi are also smtp blocked ? Any exprerience with Videotron cellular ?

To the best of my knowledge, Rogers does not block port 25 on their EDGE services. The port 25 blocking is only on the Rogers Cable Internet (ISP) service.

I'm on Rogers myself, and can send using any SMTP server just fine, using the standard Internet.com APN.

Thanks, jhollington, you were right. My problem is the contrary that what i was thinking. It is on the wifi side. They seems to be blocked on outside smtp.
How to you manage smtp setting when you switch to wifi ?

1- Put the wifi off when ready to send ?
2- Have different mail account setting to gain access to different smtp ?
3- Change manually your smtp in the settings ?

Actually, the best solution to all of this is to use an alternate port if your mail provider supports it.

Rogers only blocks port 25 (non-SSL SMTP). Generally, many mail service providers now offer alternate ports that you can use for SMTP... Common alternate ports that are available and not blocked by Rogers are 26, 465 and 587. with 587 being the most common choice (also generally considered the default port for SMTP/SSL connections). This is the best solution by far, since very few ISPs (and public WiFi spots) are going to bother blocking these ports.

To specify an alternate port, simply add it after the mail server name, using a colon as a separator: ie, put smtp.mac.com:587 in your "Outgoing Mail Server" hostname field. This setting should also transfer over if you've specified it in Mail.app or Outlook Express and are syncing your mail settings to the iPhone via iTunes.

Alternatively, you could relay all of your mail through your Rogers SMTP server using your normal Rogers.com userid and password to authenticate. The Rogers SMTP servers will allow authenticated sending from just about anywhere, although this can still be messier if you visit WiFi Hotspots (or other people's networks) that are still blocking port 25.

    >>>simply add it after the mail server name...smtp.mac.com:587

Thanks . Your explanation is pinpoint, precise and understandable. Thank you very much.
