Default can the iPhone display "normal" PNGs?

    hi

i want to do some minor modifications to my iPhone. these include for example making the "how many mails/sms"-bubbles blue instead of red, and some other small changes.
now these PNGs are all special encoded.
i can download them, run a script to "fix" them and edit.

but, when i transfer them back, do i need to "encode" the PNGs back again in apples propriotery format, or can i use the open PNG format and the iPhone still can read it?
